WIN: Start new job on Monday

After 4 weeks on the dole, I'm going to be driving tyres around for minimum wage!  Better than nothing!

I had an 'informal' interview yesterday- basically through a friend of a friend I was 'recommended' and due to some reshuffling they weren't 100% sure what the staffing levels were so brought me in yesterday to see if they liked me, and called me this morning asking me to go in on Monday.

Problem is, a) I have swine flu and b) I need Friday off!!

Anyway- YAY for me, etc.

Congratulations. After having recently got back into work after a long lay off I know it's a good feeling.

Do you really have swine flu?

Do you need to have friday off?

Do you really have swine flu?

Yes.  No.  I'm not sure, I came on ill last night, all of a sudden, not slept much, generally feel groggy, sore throat, slight cough, DOMS from Tuesday that would normally have gone by now, no appetite.  Could just be any old virus to be fair.

I don't need but I've paid £70 for a Ticket to Kendal Calling which begins Friday morning!  Be a shame to go up late on Friday evening having missed a lot of it, but at the same time I don't want to ask for it so soon!  Wish I'd mentioned it in the informal interview but I didn't expect to hear from them so soon!

When should I notify the Job Centre?  I don't want to ring them today only to get a call tomorrow morning saying "actually..." if you know what I mean.

It's a poorly paid job with pretty long hours, but its local and will pay more than JSA.  Nearly all of the drivers there have worked there for between 10 and 25 years, which to me sounds promising to have staff retention like that.

I also plan to study now, rather than cling on to the hope that I would progress up the ladder of a mediocre industry.

Good stuff mate. Believe it or not I delivered tyres for about 6 months back in 1996.I was the original white van man

It doesn't really matter to be honest 26. I waited a whole week before I told my job centre. You will need to send the little form inside your sign book back in as well as call though. They will just pay you any unemployed time since your last sign date etc.

Ah I remember you mentioning that one. I'd probably want the day off too as well. Try and mention it ASAP.

When should I notify the Job Centre?

    After you have started, usually.
When I was signed off I told them I wouldn't be able to sign next time because I started work the day before.
They told me to wait until after I had started to send the form in.

Of course, when I didn't turn up to sign on (cos I was at work) they cancelled my claim from my previous signing date, cancelled my payment, my council tax benefit, everything and basically caused me no end of trouble.

If you are going to miss a signing, make sure they put on your file that you will be at work.

Unless you have a high temperature it is not Swine Flu there are apparently at least 4 other virus' doing the rounds , if in doubt call the swine flu line to get a diagnoses over the phone , I promise you if you really have Swine Flu your new employer will NOT want you in until it is better you could totally screw their business if you pass it on to all the staff ,  I am sure they would put your start back for you if you had it but you need to be sure what you have

If you're claiming JSA are you also claiming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit? It works out being less economical to get a job paying minimum wage than to stay unemployed. Barmy really.
