Westbelfastguy's first progress journal

Yes I know that sounds like something a 7 year old would write in school but i'm out of snappier thread title ideas today.

I've been stuck in a training rut for a while now and have put some bodyfat back on so, on advice from a few on here am giving this journal thing a go. Feel free to give feedback and the occasional quip.

Right now i'm wanting to drop bodyfat and if I can add some quality muscle and up my strength at the same time then great, but for now it's most important to me to lose bodyfat.

I'm 33 years old, 6' 17st with 38" waist. I've yet to measure my muscles, mostly out of embarassment.

I work shifts so I can't guarantee total regularity as to when i can go to the gym. Lately i've had to go weeknights when it's been so busy I can't get near the weights area.

Tonight I did 50 mins of cardio split into 10 mins each piece of machinery.

Treadmill (hill climb at 5mph)
Cross trainer (cross country, intermediate level)
Bike, then cross trainer and finally treadmill (aerobic fat loss)

I'm going to have a look at a pure gym tomorrow which is a bit further away but hope the extra equipment it has will allow me to get more done.

    Thanks everyone.

Went to see Pure Gym tonight and it looks great. Their idea of peak time busy sure isnt mine. Signed up there and then, hae my pin already and have cancelled my council membership, tho that takes a month, so have 2 to choose from for a while.

A week on im very impressed by pure. I've got an appointment with a PT tomorrow for a consultation. I know a few on here have doubts about the need for a PT but I really think it may do me good and help get me on track and focused.

tbh my lifting hasnt been that focused that i'd be doing 1rm's. weights are the main area i need help with, my confidence in the weights area of the gym is pretty low. im much more comfortable on cardio

My first PT session is next wednesday after my 10th day in a row in work. In hindsight that may not have been the wisest idea!

He will also have a programme for me which i'll post here.  It'll be cardio and resistance weights.

My main focus for now will be dropping bodyfat as i've gotten up to 17st! He says getting down to around 13st is possible in 6-9 months.

Ok, first pt session over. Goals discussed, and measurements taken that embarassed me a lot, it has to be said. Dunno if I really wanna post them here. Have my routine to do and a nutrition plan is on its way tonight or tomorrow.

Basically from now on no more beer, which is a depressing thought lol

Thanks mate. its back to basics for the time being but he's promised there will be a load of variety in the personal training sessions, no 2 will be the same, so am really looking forward to that. Learning new stuff and all that jazz

Have to say, feeling great! Will post my nutrition plan up at some point but dont wanna bore everyone too much yet.

Yesterday's pt session was great, loads of stuff i've never done before, all based around core work, and was also my 5th time in the gym last week, so needless to say, i'm gonna have a rest day today!

Here's the routine I do the other 4 gym days

Warmup: Bike 6 mins level 6

Cardio: Ascending Cross Trainer level 8 incline 6.0 15 mins
                Treadmill speed 5.5 incline 7% 15 mins

    Resistance: Leg Press 52kg, 3 x 20
                       Calf Raise 59kg 3 x 20
                       Seated Curls 45kg 3 x 20
                      Convergent Chest Press 32kg 3 x 20
                      Diverging Lat Pulldown 32kg 3 x 20
                      Seated Dip 45kg 3 x 20
                      Hammer Curls 10 kg 4 x 10
                      Abdominal Crunch 36kg 4 x 15

Pretty basic i know but its working me hard so far and only gonna make improvements from here on in

I've come to the conclusion that while i've been gymming a while now on and off, I lacked the motivation, direction and goals to work to to get the most out of it.

Have had a really good week! another 5 session week, increased the weights on all my exercises yesterday and was worked harder than ever today by my pt! He said im turning into a star pupil lol Also said that he is starting to notice a physical difference already so was pleased to hear that. I know he's supposed to be motivational but at the same time wouldnt expect him to say that if it wasnt true so even more motivated now!

A week off work now too so will have good early sessions next week, with weds as a rest day

thanks ricky. still managing 5 days a week, loving it more and more. upped weights on all my exercises last week and increased difficulty on the crosstrainer, so really happy.

today's pt session was all about negative repetitions. he decided to wait till a few weeks into training me before introducing me to them and i see why. im like jelly still, 8 hours later. every pt session is more and more challenging but im loving it and up for anything so should achieve my goal of 13st within the 9 months.

im feeling great too, sleeping better, more energy and a friend commented that id lost a lot already this week. im even starting to feel it in some of my clothes so am pretty happy so far
