What Car would you buy

As I am probably the most indecisive person I know could do with some advice on my next car...the cars are

Merc CLK 230/320 - X Reg ish
BMW 5 Series - 51/02 Reg - 525 SE or Similar

Both around £13k

Both can be purchased at the end of August (I have a company car and im opting out)

or wait till Dec and buy 3 year old BMW 320d - 40k miles, all new tyres etc from guy in work who has had the car as a company car and is selling it for about £10-11k

Any advice or if anyone owns the mentioned cars etc would be appreciated.

Cheers

never spend that amount on a car, its daft.

save ur money get a car much cheaper and feel much better with savings than see it depreciate stitting out in the rain.

i discovered being 36 that cars r not a priority in life .

im matured and got some sense now.
My mate had an old 5 seriese BMW, 25 miles per gallon and high price for parts.

I do about 20k a year but its varies as i work in construction so a project can be on your door step or 70 miles away.

I have budgeted for £13k to spend and do fancy a coupe before the kids come.

Mercs ain't what they used to be, and their customer service well.....

Beemer, they are better built and better service, but doesn't it seem everyones got one nowadays?

mate - I have a CLK and no two ways about it its a nice moter. If it's 13k for a 320 then get it mate - that's cheap.

    Hasn't been problem free though

Since when can you get a clk for 13 grand? Are you talking about the old shape? I notice that the two cars in question are both in completely different categories. What exactly do you want out of the car and then you should be able to decide better.

My Dad had a 5 series and loved it.

I also don't think that, that amount is a lot for that sort of car. They cost a fortune when new but after 4-5 years you can get some great bargains.

The post does actually point out that its is an X reg car so yes it is the old shape.

The reason why i am asking for advice is that yes as you mentioned they are different types of car.

What i am asking for the money etc should i go for a coupe like the merc which will cost more to run, but look better and be more sporty or should i go for 5 series better motorway car etc or a sensible option of a smaller more economical car like the 3 series who i know has owned it since new.

There are new shape x reg clks about aswell.

You could get a 3 series convertable or coupe, or a audi a4 convertable. Both of those are comfortable and sporty at the sametime.

The new CLK came out in 2002!!

Dont really want a convertible but the 3 series coupe is a possability, but there a bit like bum holes ie everyone got one (well everyone by where i live)

Might just have to keep thinking and have some test drives etc.

Personally I'd try and get hold of an Integra DC2 for that kind of money. Fast, don't see many about, massively reliable, looks gorgeous etc.

Mine's a W reg and its the old shape, but not the very old shape - depends what we're talking about here! Remeber the newest shape came out 2003-4.

You still wont get a decent one for £13k, unless it's high mileage and ****-all extras. Mine is worth at least £16k now and that's with me being pissed of. BTW are we talking about hard top or cabriolet? any extras? Elegance or AvantGuard (sp?)?

You have to import the dc2 but yes they are gorgeous and I would love one of those. DC77 you say you want to have a coupe before you get some kiddys if you want a car thats real fun and reliabe you should look at some of the japansese manufacturers but then again if comfort is highly required due to long trips then maybe not. Generally you could do far worse than a 3 series.

In our household we have got:

    1. BMW X5 4.6is
    2. BMW M3 E36 shape
    3. Mercedes C240 Avantgarde
    4. Mercedes CL600
    5. Mercedes CLK55 (Older shape one)

Out of all of these cars everybody loves the Mercs best. The BMW's are nothing but trouble. The X5 has been back to dealers so many times I can't even remember how many. Bearing in mind that it is 52 plate that is ****e. The M3 has had electrical problems which cost over £1500 to repair.

Every one of the Mercs has ran perfectly from day one with the exception of a fault with the C240 which was covered under warranty, just meant the bulbs kept blowing in the rear lights.

If you could stretch that bit further the AMG models are the ones to go for. And my dads 55 is awesomely quick due to a bit of fiddling by Brabus in Guildford.

Take a look here and you'll see the kind of thing they do.

    Brabus Tuning

So the moral of this story is that you should go for the Merc. But thats my opinion and also my dad said this too. He is selling the BMW's later this year, once the new M-Class Merc has come. The M3 is starting to puff smoke at 80000 miles too.

Quite a "chav" selection if you buy into all that BS. How come a evo isnt on that list and why a GTS and not a GT-R.

Go for one of these. Not any dearer to run than a 320.

mines lower milage and a cab with quite alot of extras - but I still think that's cheap mate. TBH I'd think about getting that mate

My mate had his V reg 320 Cab (same shape as mine) in the Autotrader last month for £17k and got success
