What are you supposed to do when your QUAD cramps?

I'm used to getting calf cramps, if I'm half asleep and stretch my legs too hard my calf sometimes cramps up, so I just stand up really fast, and lean forward, with my knee straight and my foot bent as far as it will go.  That usually makes it go away.

Today I got a quad cramp for the first time since I was like 14 and went skiing, standing up did nothing and I was in agony for like 2 minutes until it went away.  I did front squats today at about 80% intensity 5x5, and also deadlifts, so it was a pretty heavy leg day, but weird how this is the first time in like 20 years since I had a quad cramp.

I get some serious leg cramps sometimes.  ****all you can do.  I just lie there and take it like a man (i.e wriggling around on the floor and moaning like an in heat Chihuahua that just got inseminated by a Great Dane.)

I am forever stretching. Quads are no difference and regularly tighten up but thankfully no cramps.
Just regularly stretch them out and maybe take electrolyte powder or similar.

Friend of mine gets them very badly. I think with him its partially because he is a big powerlifter who sits all day in a cramped bus seat.

Yes, I know athletes that spend as much time stretching as they do training with weights.
I try to do some stretches every day.

We still don't know what causes cramps. There are two theories, one - dydration (loss or water/electrolites) or 2 - neurological changes.

All the current evidence is pointing towards the latter with studies being done in the desert. Minimal to severe dehydration made no difference to the occurance of cramps when participants were not fatigued. Fatigue and the resulting neuromuscular changes have been shown to increase cramp occurance irrespective of dehydration.

Stretching / soft tissue work is what I would advise.

So does stretching out the quad DURING the cramp help it to subside?  Looks like I did the exact wrong thing, straightening the leg is for a calf stretch, bending the leg stretches the quad???  I actually did some couch stretches for the first time too yesterday... wtf.

I like these , using a wall to brace your foot. also the standing quad stretch.
There may be some better videos .

As above advice:  if you getting a lot of cramping then this may be due to dehydration.

Yes, cramp is basically a muscle contracting really hard so you always need to be counteracting that by stretching the muscle, which means doing the opposite movement to that muscle's function. As the calf muscle straightens the ankle (plantar flexion)the stretch for the calf is to bend the ankle (dorsiflexion). So as the main function of the quads is to straighten the leg at the knee(leg extension) and raise the upper leg at the hip (hip flexion) you need to stretch it by bending the lower leg behind you and pulling the upper leg behind you (hip extension and leg flexion).

i woke up at 3am after a heavy leg session while on a prep...quad in full contraction, i mean lactic acid building up to the point i want to vomit, rolling on the bed trying to get it to relax.
As soon as i bent the leg, the hamstring cramped up...

i was hovering between two major muscle groups wanting to cramp up... the bed was saturated in sweat and i couldnt get back to sleep through nerves lol

Same thing happened to me but whilst cycling on a busy road after the gym. Both my quad and hamstring cramped and so I had to find a precise knee angel. Nearly died ha.

Sounds awful.  You guys were on gear at the time?  I only did 2 cycles in my life and I remember that being the 1 and only time my abs ever cramped up.
