What do you take PWO? Want to try something new..

Hi all, been training 6 months now and its going really well. During this time i have always used MP impact whey protein, really good stuff and i mix this with maltodextrin. Im running out of both of these supps and need to put in an order tomorrow.

Before i do i was just going to see what else i could have PWO? 5kg malto and 5kg whey will cost me £60, is this value for money or could i be saving and try something diffrent?

Would just like to see what evryone else takes after a good workout..

What are your goals? I know your sig says to put on 6lbs but what are your long term goals? I wouldn't bother with maltodextrin. I'd rather spend my money on oats, veg or fruit.

    Current PB's
    100kg Clean & Jerk
    110kg Bench
    190kg Deadlift
    140kg Back Squat

Intresting, whats wrong with malto? for the first few months i wasnt having any carbs after my workout and was advised to use this so i have been for the last 2months.

Ive bought oats from MP before nd i really cant stand the stuff, malto is a lot easier to get down me and tastes nicer.

Whats the diffrence between malto and oats for example? both carbs

My goals.. just to generally get bigger, more mass, have very fast metabolism so find it difficult to gain weight, 11stone would be ideal for me, currently 10st 7.

Malto is a high-GI carb source, ie. fast acting. It is basically sugar. Oats are low-GI.

Post-workout is really the only time you should be getting high-GI carbs in your diet. Something to do with heightened insulin sensitivity which allows glyocgen stores to be replenished quickly so that post-wo protein you ingest will be absorbed more effectively (or something).

For every other situation you want to be eating low-GI carbs: oats, wholegrain bread, sweet potato, etc.

Nothing wrong with Malto at all, Shae is just saying it shouldn't be a priority unless the rest of your diet is sorted, or you shouldn't sacrifice funds for food to spend it on supplements. Post-wo carbs are definitely useful though, stick with the Whey and Malto post-wo.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up..
For the last month ive been having 3 shakes a day along with 3 meals as i am busy most days and having meals is a lot harder, is 3 shakes of whey/malto a day ok? I use 30g whey 50g malto.

Well no, you want to be having a low-GI carb source in your shakes throughout the day, ie. oats.

Therefore if funds permit only that you can buy either malto or something like powdered oats, go for the latter. Stick this in your shakes throughout the day, and just eat a banana with your whey post-wo. But if you can afford both, go for it.

Remember though high-GI carbs (ie. malto) = post workout only. Low-GI carbs = the rest of the day.

I prefer dextrose for this reason too. It actually makes unflavoured whey quite enjoyable!

If I'm not using a dedicated PWO shake (something already blended with some added goodies in), then I'll often just have a banana with my whey after the workout.

Malto like you're doing now is a great choice (could add 5-10g's of glutamine if you wanted), with your whey, however you can also try honey or a banana....you're after some nice simple sugars together with the fast acting protein to kick start the recovery process. Sometimes fruit can be a nice change :)

I take the same, other than dextrose rather than malt- but really no difference in it. I wouldn't change anything. However if you type www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk into the price beater on MP home page, you can get 5kg of flavoured impact whey for £39.99.

Personally I have a branded product with around 40g whey, 50g malto, 7g leucine among a few other things. I find that this is ideal if a little bit of a luxury - otherwise I'd just have whey + carbs.

This may sound silly but could you viabley have something like chocolate bar post wo, as surely its just pure sugar?

Yeah if you ask its Reflex's Growth Matrix You could have a choc bar + some whey, I wouldn't though it would make me feel sick to have chocolate after training!

    ditto.
Ive ditched using High-GI carbs PWO and simply using 40-50grams whey Isolate with an apple.
