but as it happens we are the cleverest of all the mammals (not me personally) so we enjoy being incharge until the rats take over after the nuclear war of '09

Humans, or human beings, are bipedal primates belonging to the mammalian species Homo sapiens (Latin for "wise man" or "knowing man") under the family Hominidae (the great apes).[1] Humans have a highly developed brain capable of abstract reasoning, language and introspection. This, combined with an erect body carriage that frees their upper limbs for manipulating objects, has allowed humans to make greater use of tools than any other species.

Like most primates, humans are by nature social. However, humans are particularly adept at utilizing systems of communication for self-expression and the exchange of ideas. Humans create complex social structures composed of co-operating and competing groups, ranging in scale from nations to individual families, and social interaction between humans has established a variety of traditions, rituals, ethics, values, social norms, and laws which form the basis of human society. Humans also have a marked appreciation for beauty and aesthetics which, combined with the human desire for self-expression, has led to cultural innovations such as art, literature and music.

Humans are also noted for their desire to understand and influence the world around them, seeking to explain and manipulate natural phenomena through science, religion, philosophy and mythology. This natural curiosity has led to the development of advanced tools and skills; humans are the only known species to build fires, cook their food, clothe themselves, and use numerous other technologies.

    IMO we are animals that:

happen to be able to build more sophisticated habitats than other animals,

have methods that allow food to become more readily available and conveniently,

have the need to reproduce and continue the human race through safer and more clinical methods than other animals,

more curious than other species in the way that we try and find purpose for our existance,

humour ourselves by finding recreational activities to fill our time in between eating, sleeping, reproducing, and dying. lol

Other than that, we're nothing special at all really

lol- this guy just cracks me up every time.

with regards to what makes us human - as toxic says IMO.

what distinguishes ourselves from animals- nothing IMO, although we are far more complicated, but our behavious can easily be simplied and it fits the same pattern as animals.

perhaps our ability to feel guilt distinguishes us from animals and therefore makes us human

<----Puts hands on heart and in a real sentimental way say:

To have compassion for others of the species, 'to love', 'to believe', 'to care' etc etc BULLSH*T

Humans, we are another mammal living on planet earth, we have greater brainpower than the other animals which has caused us to be the strongest (in darwins survival of the fittest sense).

Also our increased brainpower gives us greater feelings and emotions, greater sociological concepts aswell.

It doesn't mean anything. Wiki Relativism. Being human is what ever you want it to be to you.
It doesn't have to have a meaning but as humans we look for one cause we're like that.
Shakespeare... put's it better than me
    Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
    Signifying nothing.

Being human is no more significant, than being a gold fish.

I think the ability to control instincts is an important part of being human.

JohnOv... good post. I also know that entire speech by heart lol.

So if one is not able to control instincts.. are they still human?

And if one doesn't have the brainpower or ability to have feelings and emotions.. or able to grasp greater sociological concepts.. would they still be human?

Would you not say that 'humans' are afraid of the unknown? Or is that just another way of saying that we are 'curious'?

a mix of physiological and psychological traits aquired from nature and nurture to create a unique being

So all 'humans' must aquire these sets of traits through nature and nurture, because if they didn't then they wouldn't be considered human?
If one were to be deprived of nurture to a certain extent and not be able to get most of these psychological 'traits', then what would you consider them?
And if they were to not fit into the set of physiological traits needed to be considered 'human' then what would they be?
Do these two sets of traits actually have to vary greatly and perhaps make it impossible to fully define what it is to be human?

I think a human should be able to control themself yes, (not that all instincts are wrong or should be controlled of course) you should be able to make an intelligent decision rather than an emotional/instinctive one. What i was thinking of was acceptable behaviour around others, not raping/attacking others like an animal might.

So a human 'should be able' to basically reason. But this seems to be more of a conflict of morals. It can be perfectly acceptable behaviour to them, but not to you.
So if you think they can't reason properly then they're not human.. they're just animals in a human body? Again, in your opinion...

Yes, that seems to sum it up for me. Of course thats just my opinion on the humanity thing, a human is something with the DNA of a homo-sapien(sp?) really.
