What is diversity?
And I don't mean the dance group that won BGT. I've just spent the last 4 hours filling out an on-line application form for the Police for a back office role and the latest question is thus: In no more than 500 words please answer the following: What is your understanding of diversity? I've just completed 1000 words on how my previous employment history meets the skills, experience and experience for this role, I've written another 1000 words on previous job roles and responsibilities, now this. I'm a bit stumped and need a bit of help getting going with this question. Cheers.

Cue a load of numbskulls telling you you can't join the police unless you're a disabled, gay Muslim...

its the same for police here. theyre all very 'pc', pardon the pun, and are all about respecting diversity and being all open and inclusive. they just wanna know that you respect and understand what it means to be different and that everyones equal, blah blah blah

Well the question is preceeded by the following: This area is assessed throughout the recruiting process. If the standard is not met, the applicant will be considered for rejection. So it doesn't matter if I'm perfectly suited for the role in terms of skillset, experience, attitude, previous employment history, if I haven't experienced cultural/lifestyle/gender/sexuality (etc) diversity or can't explain it in a way that satisfies the selction board I'm fooked. I'm struggling to think of an occasion where I've experienced this though.

Champ Kind: What in the hell's diversity? Ron Burgundy: Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

The gym where I used to be a fitness manager was an Inclusive facility, i.e. it catered for disabled and non-disabled people. I used to train several disabled members. Does this fall into the criteria of diversity as I'm fairly experienced with that element?

yeah that would be a good example. you were able to take their disability into account, respect it and empower them to do all that was in their physical capabilty and improve on it

Does this fall into the criteria of diversity as I'm fairly experienced with that element? Yep. Talk about that it some detail - lots of brownie points. Discuss what 'inclusive' meant to you - running the establishment in a way that made it accessible both physically and psychologically to disabled clients, respecting and being aware of their needs as disabled gym users. If you possibly can include something about the gyms muslim membership - how did you ensure that they did not feel discriminated against or marginalised. What about female members, in what way did you help to make them feel welcome. Any openly gay gym members that you worked with etc etc

Diversity is walking down High Holborn on a summers day and seeing women from short, dark ones to tall blonde ones that you would eat glass to shag. Ahhhhhh diversity........

If you stuggle filling out that form you are going to struggle with the job at hand. It will have you pulling your hair out. At any moment you could be pulled in to sit in front of a review board about 'the incident' which involved you mumbling the word 'coon'. And eventually involves you losing your job. I would avoid being a PC at all costs because all the racial awareness and tolerance laws have lead to an intolerant, intolerable society. Who wants to serve that society. Not me.

society is a joke nowadays cant have a job beacuse you punched a guy in a wheelchair the fact he only has a slight limp due to a minor accident at work, and is using the wheelcair as a cover so he can claim dole and disability allowance, and you only punched him cause he kept grabbing your wifes arse in a pub and when you confronted him about it, he stood up out the wheelchair and started pusing you around, has nothing to do with it, alright, not a great example, but all the facts have to be looked at, and this doesnt happen in the real world get a job as a desk jockey for the police and you ll be branded a dirty pig like the rest of them, like when they arrest scum of the earth for beating up their wife or stealing cars, and get away with it because of a "technicallity" is laughable sorry, bit of a rambling rant there but im sure theres a point somewhere
