What is your favourite 'reward' from going to the gym?

No matter what level we all go to the gym and have our own various goals.

What would you say that your favourite goal is? The thing that makes you want to carry on going to the gym, the thing that gives you most happiness and enjoyment/fulfillment from this activity?

With regards to myself, i would say that over the years things have changed quite dramatically as i have progressed at this activity.

When i first started, it was because i enjoyed the extra attention i recieved from girls, i enjoyed the attention i could talk to people about it, i also enjoyed trying to get stronger for a relatively high rep set (wasnt particularly interested in low rep sets or singles).

Then as i progressed, the 'sport' took hold and i began to care a lot less about attention from anyone, carried on focussing on rep strength, i would really try and push myself in the gym and try to increase my performance each time. But also care a lot more for really trying to improve aesthetics from the artistic point.

Now, i dont really like the attention (although it's more than ever, obviously as the bigger/better you get, the more you recieve, but it's not always good attention either!), i prefer to hardly even talk about my sport with general public nowdays so i change subject immeadiately or shrug off any questions people ask about bodybuilding. I dont really care so much for strength either now and trying to get pb's all the time. But the whole contest side and aesthetics has completely taken over, a lot of attention to detail and trying to change the contours and bits of the body to really complete the sculpture. I guess since i started competing, this side takes over with people who want to really excel in the competition side of the sport.

So how about you? Everyone trains for a different reason, everyone finds different pleasures out of training, what motivates you and keeps you going?

Has your 'reward' and what you look for when you go to the gym changed over the years as you have developed (like mine has), or has yours always stayed the same?

Train hard. Adam.

    Welcome back mate!

I guess about 5/6 years ago, like yourself I liked going out and getting attention from girls (It wasn't loads but more than I would get now). Certainly helps the ego.

A lot has changed though. I started seeing a girl about 4 years ago and got into the comfort zone, too many takeaways and bottles of wine etc. Still trained but my physique was deteriorating badly.

Last year was the year of the injury for me and I ended up a complete mess by the end of 2010.

This year things are back on track. Training hard, dieting well and injury free (touch wood) oh and single as of a few months ago! I'm noticing visible changes every week looking in the mirror now and remembering how things used to be. I guess that's my reward mate. Just standing in front of the mirror knowing all the sweat, blood and tears are worth it.

Personally I just love training as a whole, im in a long (ish) term relationship so attention doesnt really bother me, although is nice to be noticed or get comments from my gf or friends commenting on any improvements.
I also love the fitness side of it, have been getting into my running a lot more as of late which is a bit of a new side as wasnt ever too bothered previously

Hitting Pb's and getting a admiring glance or two is always nice.

Being on the way down from 28odd stone I love seeing people who havn't seen me in a while and are amazed by the transformation, last weigh in was 20st 6lb.

Seeing as I love every aspect of training I want more to happen, often expecting it to come too soon sometimes, so learning that weight loss and strength gains are a marathon and not a sprint is very important for people to understand.

    Similar.

At first it was for attention.

Now i have my ideal goal of what a physique should look like and what i want to make my physique look like.

I have no ambition to compete, i love bb'ing but standing on stage is not for me.

i like PB's, again i never try 1 rep max's. my sets never drop below 6 reps. Maybe one time i will give the strength game a go.

I must admit i can be lazy at times however the idea of looking average or normal again does not ride well with me.

In order of most to least important:

    General Health
    Fitness
    Increased energy levels
    Looks
    Strength

When we get these sorts of threads it always shocks me how many people never mention health as a reward they look for from visiting the gym. I really don't see the point in looking good on the outside if you're unhealthy on the inside.

biggest reward for me is having the type of fit looking body that I want, its personal pride with a dash of vanity but thats ok with me. Recently though I have been getting more 'into' enjoying increasing the load and hitting pbs.

I likes the attention too :-)

For me it is the self confidence it has given me. I always feel smaller than I really am and before gaining the size I have now, I was very low on confidence. I came across as a miserable tw@ but is was just because I was nervous / shy about meeting new people. I am a completely different person now and am much happier for it.

For me, seeing the slow growth of muscle, the building of a new shape, the excitement of competing.  Once upon a time it was for attracting women but thats long in the past (5 years odd).

Also, one of the main draws is for an hour or so i'm free - no stress/worries/anger/pain get into my head, its just me, the iron and nothing more.  Bliss.

Being able to eat a fvcking massive pizza and not feeling an ounce of guilt because I've put in a hard week at the gym. That is a pretty good reward in my book

    Current training: 6-day split
Current cycle: Test E @ 500mg per week

    Current stats:
    Height : 192cm
    Weight : 272lbs
    Body Fat : 15.4%

Used to be for attention from girls on nights out

Now I haven't been out drinking in over 6 months and it's just about getting as big as possible and seeing what happens if I want to compete or not.

I've got to a size now where the Mrs doesn't entirely like it and says people don't think it looks nice...so I guess I'm on the right tracks ;-)

Adam - why have you joined under a new name, plus I hate to tell you this but my partner glanced over my shoulder and asked "who the hell is big bad batty boy, not a very PC name is it for a BBing board."  Which although made me laugh very hard, I could see his point though and wondered if you had seen this?

Vanity definately plays a part in why I train, although thats not as important now, I gave up smoking after nearly 20 years when my kids came along in order to regain some fitness and piled on some unwanted poundage.

Now its a mixture of wanting to be someone my kids look upto and hopefully emulate a healthy lifestyle and its a chance to get an hour to myself where I wouldnt normally!

Being able to look at pics of myself from 10 years ago and knowing how far I've come and that I'll never look like that again.  Plus I can make it up on stage which was a massive thing for me
