What pop-culture facets will define the 00's?
With this decade drawing to close, and with the birth of high-speed internet changing the way we consume media and entertainment, what will be remembered as defineable of this era? When you reminisce about this decade what pop-culture springs to mind?. It dosen't even have to have been your favourite, just what you think will stand out and be synonimous with the 00's. At this moment I'm actually having a hard time, this whole period of time seems so damn fragmented.......

dempsey WAGS and wannabe Jordan types unfortunately. True. Dare I say gangsta rap too? Yeah yeah, I know it's existed in it's pure form since the 80's. However, I'd say this decade has really seen it commodified and marketed for a wider audience.

MJH These. What the hell are they all about though?! They're actually quite a recent fashionista item I think. A lame attempt at a sort of faux 'The rave is back!' bollox. Yeah, they fcuk me right off too. I find them quite useful as an 'arsehole barometer', if you will. If I see someone wearing them I immediatley know I have nothing in common with that particular type of self-aggrandinisng, brand of twat. And give them a wide berth.

Interesting. As already mentioned Big Brother and the Wag culture but musically where do you go? We had brit pop in the nineties? You could probably class it as the pop idol decade which is worrying. My taste in metal is fairly mainstream and weve had no global super band like Metallica this decade or the last.

Metal will never be used to define an era.....unfortunatly

Music wise, nothing in particular stands out for me. Of course, there's been innumerable bands who started out in the 80's and 90's that have continued to release good material across the genres. However, as for anything new, innovitative or unique to this decade.....

I think pop culture in the '00s will be defined by the cult of the celebrity, or rather people who have become celebs on the pure fact they are celebs, very strange phenomenon. Musically I think the only really 'ground breaking' development will be the 'pop idol/X-Fatcor' era. Perhaps the biggest impact on pop music culture has been the Ipod/Itunes and Youtube, in that music simply isn't being consumed in the means it has been before. The real money in the music industry is now through live performance rather than huge record sales.

You've said it already. The internet. Music on demand. Ipods. Tailor-made playlists combining multiple genres.

JohnKerr2 You've said it already. The internet. Yep, that The internet has been the only big thing to happen in the last ten years Quite sad, really. What a weak decade. I use the internet all the time and I still think it's a piss poor thing for a decade to be remembered for

It's a piss poor reason for it to be remembered this decade - now that's it's mainly used for facebook, myspace, and all that sh1t - the 90s would be a good decade for it, the invention of the WWW and HTML, the beginning of filesharing, online gaming, getting music online, broadband starting to become affordable etc. Massive changes from 1990 to 2000 really, but apart from looking flashier I can't think of anything so significant to happen to it this decade. There's just more stuff on it lol. I suppose it did take until recently (and myspace, facebook etc) to start getting moro...I mean normal people into the internet though.
