What to do after university?

hi guys, im doing law, and ive got a solid 2;1 so far.

basically, im unsure whether to apply for training contracts for law, or whether to search other arenas. I havent applied for training contracts yet, as i didnt feel my CV was up to the job, ( ive started to do some more things that should impress employers)

possibilities,

1) do a masters degree

2) fund the LPC ( legal training) myself

3) take a year off, travel and work a little bit, and apply for a training contract for LPC

4) take a work placement in NYC for a year, * like this option but would mean another year off afterwards for applying for graduates jobs/training contract.

    Hi mate

I've just finished Uni myself only got a 2:2 and am struggling to decide what to do so i'm applying all over the place at the moment. I don't really know anything about Law and studying for it but if i was you i'd take the NYC placement, it'd be great experience along with the opportunity to travel. Not to many people get those sort of opportunities. Good work on the 2:1.

i would say go for the year work placement in nyc as the experience would be the most valueable thing on your cv.

Go to ny for the year mate, are you mad? If you dont go to new york for the year then you are mad.

You have the oppurtunity to go to possibly the best city in the world for the year and live out there with a job placement for the year and you are wondering whether or not to go?

You might get asked to stay if they like you, then youll be able to get job in new york and get green card aswell. Honestly when you are there you will love it. So much more money in manhattan, and you can have oppurtunities to meet so many people. Come on matey wake up man, you have a year placement in new york at a law firm right? Dont you think that with your english accent (i dont know if you do well with the ladies or not or what you look like) but if you do ok with the women then think of the people you will meet out there and how many contacts you can make.

New york definately, if its not new york then do the masters.

im thinking the new york placement could be a good look aswell, i do allright with the women mate, i just put a (flattering) pic up on hotornot.com and got 9.6/10, i dont think im that good looking though.

I think it could be good training over there aswell, gyms, supplements, etc

Then the year after i could spend my time trying to get a training contract, or possibly stay over in NY if the people over there like me

what is to stop you going to new york then coming back and doing the masters, cos lets face the more qualifications and experience you have the more you will earn.

off topic:where you from and where do you train cos i swear i saw a guy in the gym the other day he looked just like you.

From my research i've found out that if you wanna be a solicitor then the city firms don't care much for a masters - it doesn't make much of a difference apparently. I think funding the
LPC is too big of a burden and a risk. I would say, if you can, either go to NY for the year whislt applying for training contracts, or work for a year and then re-apply for training contracts.

have some fun, a mate of mine finished law last year and its driving him nuts that i had a year to dos around doing whatever i want, while he makes £14k a year typing letters and answering stupid phonecalls.

go to NYC; as everyone has said it'll look good on your cv, and its bound to be a good experience.

you've got a 2;1 under your belt; dont worry too much about launching into a career immediately. i got a 2;2 in mech eng and promised my life away, and im regretting it cos i think at our age you should still be living your life without too many commitments; it might be the last chance you get after all!

my philosophy is; do whatever is gonna give you the most stories to tell at the end of your life.

Go travelling mate, I have been coping with a year of rejection since I graduated last year, there's no point trying hard to get in now its virtually impossible. My mate went for a graduate position with BUPA, there were 5 openings and about 200 graduates turned up, we're still young enjoy life a bit before pursuing your career.

my favourite, but you would have probably guessed it mate

Picture yourself: you'll be pushing papers from dusk till dawn till you retire and get stuck to the rat race soon enough. Get some real life experience under your belt, learn, get to know stuff and all that bollocks.

Good to hear you are doing well though mate! You've earned it!

    Travel mate, most definatly.
Life is rich without money, it's about memories and experiances... how better to get more than travel.
It's the ONLY reason I sometimes feel I missed out by having my kids young.

Soon as I am 38 when my youngest is 16, me and the GF are off traveling as best we can for the rest of ou days exploring the world.

my g/f did a year in NY as part of her degree and she absolutely loved it. I have three or four friends that are solicitors and it seems quite a hard business to get into now as there are so many law graduates. I know one former practicing solicitor who refuses to go back to law and works in the same place as me now.
