What you do now VS What you wanted to do?

I'm not talking about when you wanted to be a cowboy or an astronaut or even a cowboy astronaut!
I'm talking about just before you left school what did you want to do and what do you actually do now? Is it anything close? Are you happy? Does anyone do what they set out to do?

I wanted to do something IT based, I saw the internet being the future and thought it would be good work. I instead joined the military, submarine service. Now I work offshore mainly Africa doing heavy hydraulics. extremely happy (most of the time).

    Now : accountant

Wanted to be a police officer. I tried to escape accountancy 6 years ago an applied to the police, passed all application phases, had uniform fitting, start date & then the economy crashed = all recruitment on hold. :-(

    Still an accountant.

Wanted to be a car designer as a kid. Ended up as an office junior then a stores person after school.
Left to join the RAF at 23 and left after 12 years.
Now in stock control and distribution. Should have stayed in the forces but then I wouldn't have met my wife.
Reasonably happy but looking to move on in a couple of years (from the job, not the wife!)

Wanted to be a software developer, currently a software developer.

Games development was my thing in college (had some success with shareware games in the 90s) and thought I wanted to keep doing it.  Then discovered geographical computer systems and wanted to specialise in that.  Currently in the finance industry on eneterprise systems, but funny enough a vacancy has popped up in the area looking for developers for a geographical related system.  Going to have a chat with them.

Oddly enough, I'm doing exactly what I said I wanted to do when I was about 12 years old.

When I got my first computer and started messing with them, even at a young age realised it was the future and no one else at school was interested in them.  It nearly went very wrong when I ended up taking a full time job at 16 and not going down the college route (did a bit of day release/evening stuff).  The company where I worked doing admin stuff for the first 7 years of my career got a new computer system so I ended up looking after it.  That led onto another job in the same industry and I moved into an IT department.

Fast forward a few years and I'm the Group IT Manager for a company.

i planned to join the army. my dad was in the army for 24 years and its something i always wanted to do.

because we moved around every 3 or so years i decided to wait till i was 18, because it was nice to have long term mates.
anyway, i got a loan out for a car, which ended up being wrote off.
when i went to sign up, they wouldnt let me because i had a loan. i'd never heard about this before and neither had my dad.

    so... i never joined......****!

I knew once you were in the MOD took money management very seriously, i.e. if you had debts they would allow debtors direct access to your pay cheque, not sure if it was to stop you being in a vulnerable position or not?

Wanted to be a fighter pilot then just normal pilot.

At one point was looking like a real possibility was in cadets, completed my private pilots license etc etc then went to uni met a load of bell ends decided I probably wouldn't make it to fast jets anyway which was what i wanted to do. So gave up. Regret it as I could have pulled my finger out and made more of an effort maybe not fast jets but sure I would have been able to fly something. Then through Uni I wanted to be a Trader in the city lured by the money etc etc.

Roll on 7 years I have my own financial markets recruitment business its not ideal but it pays me ok and I can spend a lot of time skiing, just took on my first employee which is daunting but altogether exciting so its not worked out too bad...... fingers crossed!!!

I wanted to be a firefighter from a very young age, I hated school and the institution of having to go to school. I left school at 16 and did an electrical apprenticeship. Grafted my arse off as a sparky for 9 years whilst saving then left the UK to set up my dream job of owning my own technical diving company. I got the opportunity in Thailand and did this for a number of years. Sold that and came back to the UK.

Now a EHV transmission & Distribution networks consultant which involves me sitting at a desk or out in a helicopter taking photographs of towers (pylons) then assessing conditions.

I'd rather be still underwater but that lifestyle is a young mans game not someone about to start a family & I still want to be a firefighter!!!!

Well if I ever got to that size I would be long gone. Sadly it won't happen but if i can get ten people working for then I think I can keep a nice balance between work and play. I am working on the basis of hiring 1 person for every six months I am in business. Hence why only 1 person atm.

Ha Dazzz I don't know about that let me come back to you after year 1 and 2 of my business are out the way and I am not bankrupt, worn out or fed up lol.

Wanted to be a stock broker. I got a conditional offer for a finance and investment course at City University when I was 20, but failed to get the A-level grades. At 21 I had a lot of depression and decided the only option was an office job. Now, I do occasional events work, but am otherwise looking for work. I can't say I am happy in general, but that's the way things turned out.
