Where is the Microsoft Office key?

Bought a Dell Studio laptop from Currys a couple of months ago.
It came with Office pre-loaded.
Now need to use Word and it's prompting for the product key, which I can't find.

The various discs that came with it are for the OS and various drivers, plus one for Microsoft Works - which has a product key that Word doesn't accept, obviously enough.

Phoned Currys but might as well have had a conversation with a dairylea sandwich.

Phoned Dell which said it's a Currys offer and to phone Currys.

Any ideas or am I stuffed? There's no Office/Word disc in the box.

Are you sure it came with the full version of Office loaded on?   Not a trial version instead?

Dunno Fi. It's me you're talking to - tech dunderhead number 1.

It has Word on it. It works as read-only.

    Prompts for key.

    Thanks.

I had this, and I am a computer numpty too. It turned out to be a six month trial of Office only.

You did gain far too much fat though,I mean, you're not muscular at all, you're just a fat mess.

Chances are it was a three month trial of office 2007 you had installed. Once the three month trial period is up, you'll need to purchase a license from microsoft to continue using it, hence the lack of a key displayed anywhere in your sales bundle.

It's a common ploy with computer manufacturers, advertise a piece of kit as coming equiped with a bunch of sotware but fail to highlight that the majority of that software are 'trial versions', thus making the consumer think they are getting a better deal than they actually are (the majority of these free trials including office are available as downloads from the web).

As Osagi said, it was probably just a free trial.

Try downloading Openoffice, its almost identical to Microsoft Office, is completely compatible with all word/excel etc files, and it's free.

Yes was just about to advise Open Office, we recommend it to students who do not wish to purchase MS Office.

The only downside with openoffice (he says having just recommended it lol) is that it's a little slow to start and has a habit of eating up memory, making it a pain to use on older, lower spec machines.

But seeing as it's free I guess you can't grumble too much.

Btw Righty, openoffice was written in java which is where it's 'slowness' and bloated memory usage tends to come from.

Definitely worth trying OpenOffice, since you either may not have access to a copy of the Full office nor want to spend the money to buy one.

You'll be able to do 99% of what you want in OO it may just take a bit of getting used to.

Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

Have you tried looking on the underside of the laptop?. There's usually a sticker with the product key on the bottom of the laptop.

ID just call MS Uk, You can usually tell them the product key and wether it was  trial or not, usually if its a trial you get a message saying so everytime you open up word, excel etc etc.

Saying that even if your trial was up, it would be saying that, and telling you how to go buy a serial number to fully use it again.

This is true. I would assume it should say the trial version has now expired, rather than just stop letting you use it.

I've installed Open Office. Seems to work just like Word.

    Thanks all.
