Which big mobile / phablet?

I've had a Samsung Note 2 which I have been happy with.  Looking for an upgrade  - budget circa £200 - £350 - happy to go second hand.

I'd probably be happy with the Note 3... but fancy something maybe a little bit bigger than that... (5.7") - but don't want to sacrifice performance.

Any suggestions?  :)

Calm down, I didn't make up that word :D

Phil - how do you find the faux leather back?  I would prefer plastic or aluminum?  Do you not think it feels cheap?

I have a htc one m8 and it's about as big as i'd like to go really. One of the lads in work has the galaxy note 2 and it's rediculously huge when he puts it up to his ear. Add the bulk of a case to it and it just looks comical. Battery life is also fairly pants.

The m8 looked huge when I bought it, compared to my old iphone 4s but now the 4s looks tiny by comparison and the m8 just right.

Depends what you need it for really. I have a nexus 9 for watching movies on when on the go, so don't need a phone with a huge screen.

iPhone 6+. Love it but it's not cheap. I'm an iPhone fan though but the bigger phone made a nice change.

I don't mind it - mostly spends the time covered with a case so not an issue. Feels quite nice in the hand as well. I don't like how easily aluminium scratches, but equally I'm also not so fussy that I'm bothered by plastic and have to have a metal phone like some people. The function interests me, and this has pretty much got it all (that I have any use for). Solid build quality as well.

Huawei Medipad X2 has just been announced, but you need a serious big head if you're not using a Bluetooth headset.

got the note 3 , not really looking for an upgrade as its still the dogz b0llocks , newer phones don't really off much of an improvement , if I had to upgrade thought I would probably wait for the HTC one m9

Currently using a Sony Xperia Z Ultra -  Yeah its a bit 2013... but its still great spec!  And at around £200 its a steal I think.
Cons  -  Mediocre Camera with no flash,  Weak (but not pathetic) speaker,  funny old situation with screen protectors (see note)

Pros  - Screen looks awesome,  REALLY thin,  Waterproof.

The thing about screen protectors -  The devices has a screen protector fitted in the factory, (plastic shatterproof layer), this is softer than glass, so you risk scratching it.  so really you need to put ANOTHER screen protector over the top of it! (meaning you'll never scratch the factory one!) -  Or alternatively, you could just use it "as is",  but know you might have to replace it if you scratch it (and lose the SONY logo in the process .... or you could remove it and use it without a screen protector at all, but you lose the oleophobic coating by doing this.   -  This sounds like a terrible problem, but to be honest its not a big deal once you get your head around it!

I love mine, my other phone is an M8 and I'm torn between the two.

    http://www.expansys.com/sony-xperia-z-ultra-black-251174/

I ordered mine through  http://www.rakuten.co.uk       got a 20% off code, (check Hot UK Deals or their homepage)  that gave me about £25 off the Expanses price, but it was still delivered by Expansys - Plus I got £25 worth of "free points" (not sure how that even happened!) ... so a week later ordered a case and an Xbox game for my son free!     But even at the £214 price I'd be happy.

    Thanks all.

The screen size on that Sony would suit me... I could never go under 5.5 now...  - pity about the camera... a decent lens is important to me....... hmmmmmmmmmm.??

Yeah if camera is a priority you can pretty much rule it out. I think its fine outdoors (8MP) but it struggles a bit in low light and doesn't have a flash. I'll find some sample photos/Video

    Here's a camera specific review.

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/sony-xperia-z-ultra-review-camera-quality-page-3

I love mine,  this thing is unbelievable thin, and feels like you are simply holding a piece of glass in your hand, and build quality feels out of this world (a HUGE contrast to the Samsungs I've had)   I am totally converted to Sony and my next 'flagship' phone will probably be either a newer version of this,  or a z5/whatever!

    Many thanks - appreciated.

So it got 8/10 on that review?  The camera doesn't have to be AMAZING, but it does need to be useable, - both for video and photo... - from that review it does look adequate?

Yeah, I find it fine. but then I don't tend to expect too much from mobile cameras generally, its more the lack of flash I think is the problem... and then thats more about using it as a torch than much else!

Video is pretty good I think, just found this on Youtube -

I think Rakuten is offering £20 off on their homepage?  This should give you it for £194, I think thats a bargain. but if you need the flash/better camera,  then not so much.

My advice would be to look at a few reviews (not just one or two, because there are a few that are really unfair out there!)

Its funny how a few years ago I had a 5" Dell Streak, everyone said it was bonkers, too big to be phone, too small to be a tablet!  Niche product that didn't have a place - Now if you want a flagship phone with a 4.5" or smaller screen you have to buy a special "compact" or "mini" version.

People have finally realised that phones are now 'screen centric' ... and the biggest screen you can fit in your pocket is the best.

Thanks again.  I have never had a problem with the Note 2 fitting it into my pocket etc, - I wear Docker type chinos for work and mostly jeans out... - how do you find this Sony pocket wise?

It is big! , and it has square corners which makes it seem bigger(!) ... it is remarkably thin though, I think its the thinnest on the market?  or at least it was for a while. so that makes a difference. The only problem is this thing is glass both sides, so you may feel the need to case it?   I never 'trouser pocket' phones either, so I've never tried, but I'd guess you could encounter problems.
I'd recommend getting the dimensions and cutting it out of a piece of cardboard to get an idea of the sheer size of it.

    Very applicable comparison video!

Great point - i would definitely have to put a case on it... sooner or later it's going to be dropped.  Very tempting, but I think the size may prove to be a little more annoying.. very close call.. I can get an excellent condition Note 3 for circa £200.  For me, I don't the extra capability and features seem worth over double that amount of cash for the Note 4... so I think the Note 3 will be the way I am heading...!

Thanks again all - great thread and posts - great info and food for thought
