Who is running Vista??

I am considering buying a new laptop, and can spec it with Vist basic, Vista Pro, or windows xp.

I am always skeptical of new op systems, especially the first generations.

So is anyone running Vista at the moment? if so how is it performing? any faults/niggles?

Many thanks

i am running it and it runs good. One niggly thing though is i keep getting a pop saying some of my software is not compatable with vista, but thats it. I have no idea what software it is on about by the way, i think it is something pre installed on my laptop.

    I'm using Pro.

You need a beast to run it on but it seems stable, the user interface is nice and programs start fast / seem to perform well.

On the downside you may find it struggle to get drivers for old equipment.

It's at least as good as XP so you may as well get it pre-loaded.

Running Vista since beta, and love it. Do a lot of software development on it, and a fair bit of game playing. Only thing Ive had issues with was converting some videos, but that was due to something else installing a non-vista driver. I wouldn't go back to XP

I think I read somewhere that it is not yet upto speed with nvidia drivers so games will not run anywhere near the framerates as identical xp'd machines. Anyone got anymore on this??

I got an upgrade with the laptop, guaranteed upgradeable.
When I try to upgrade, it says it can't be done, have to do a fresh install, so I will hold off for another bit.

I use it in work a fair bit and I like it, but not to the point of running out to the shops and buying it.
I rarely have an image running for longer than a few weeks, so I have no idea how its affected by registery redundancy.

A lot of products are now compatible, but there are still a good few which are not.

I installed Vista Ultimate about 4 months ago and it has been running great with only the odd minor problem, Nvidia is releasing updated drivers every few months at the moment and i havn't had any problems with games, great OS and i would never go back to Win 2000. I have a high spec machine and i think the majority of problems people are having are because there machines are not powerfull enough it really is a power hungry OS.

Tried it (on the ex's pc). Not really that impressed. XP with fancy bells and whistles. Not worth the cash.

Saw the preview of Leopard (the new Apple OS) on the WWDC video - it absolutely blows Vista away IMO

You can browse all the files on your computer in the same "coverflow" way you do on iTunes , and then you can fully preview all kinds of document straight from this view (you have to see it to appreciate it ) this also lets you browse all documents on all computers in your network too

Time machine is amazing , you can simply flick back and find documents you deleted months ago !

The Core animation is amazing - there was a demo where there were hundreds of videos , all playing simaltaneously , and you could zoom in and out of them etc , again ,you really have to see it to understand why it's so amazing

The best part of the show was at the end when Steve Jobs announces "we have a basic version for $129 " (worried murmers from crowd)
" We have a premium version .... for $129 , (crowd laughs) we have a Business version for $129 , we have an ultimate version for $129 " - by which point the crowd were in hysterics ...You gotta love Steve Jobs !

same here, no problems running games, I have vista home premium and Nvidia graphics card.
only problem I had was my creative webcam wouldn't work with vista, creative haven't released an up to date driver for vista yet.

I'm running vista on my laptop, dont really use it for anything other than internet and MS office.

No problems, but I cant see the point of it being past XP

hehe ive been running the dev preview of leopard for months mate . Although i do use windows in parallels for my N64 emulation software . Anyway back to the topic at hand, Vsta IMO is total dog sh!t, no OS should need 1gb of RAM just to "work" and a heavy duty gaming PC spec to "look good". All in all, poor product from a non imaginative company

Ive used it on my core 2 duo iMac and it was the slowest OS i have ever used, not to mention downright annoying with the security manager asking me 6 times if i wanted to do something in the control panel. That was my explanation for Vista

now for my explanation on Leopard:
Im a ADC member mate so all i can say is this, the performance is through the Æ’ucking roof! Drivers are up to date, windows are snappier, overall overhead is down compared to 10.4. Just a absolutely fantastic OS mate, cant wait till it goes GM. Still full of bugs but its very very very impressive.
