Whos got Roku, Amazon fire TV, Apple TV or any of these?

Many questions but first. How do you find them?

Would you cancel your Sky/Virgin and just have one of those? Have you done this?

Do you keep basic Sky or Virgin sub and have one of these?

Id like to get rid of the ever increasing sky cost, ive been looking at Amazon Fire TV coupled with the Amazon Prime membership it looks good.

How do you watch Sport?

Also a big feature for me is recording programs with sky + I know there is a way of recording Amazon I assume with some sort of cloud storage as I know it doesn't come with storage.

If you have answers to any of these or just want to say your experience with any of them it would be great.

Cheers.

I cancelled Sky a few months ago and haven't missed it. You can continue to use the sky dish and box to get your freeview but I find it a pain as the channels you can actually watch are few and far between so you have to scan a whole load to look between them, or mesmerise the channel numbers. Annoyingly they also restrict some freeview channels that you should be getting for free and would do via aerial. Freeview through the TV is better.

I have Apple TV but wouldn't really recommend it unless you have an iPhone or ipad and like to throw photos and videos etc up on the big screen, or stream other stuff like music that's on your phone or tab to a sound system equipped tv (but there are better ways to do that in any case). Bbc iplayer, itv catch up etc can all be thrown up there through the iPhone or pad which is useful.

A friend mentioned an Openbox to me yesterday, which uses the sky dish/box and a pc to get pretty much all channels for free. The box is about £40 or £80 for one that records. They're on eBay. He likes it but I haven't seen it in action, will probably look into it myself.

Im just looking at that on Amazon. The reviews seem really good. I cant work out though is it just a replacement box. Will be fantastic if as you say you get the channels for free.

I wouldn't have a box, jstu Internet.

Between Torrs, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, you are completely covered except for sports, but dont watch them except for F1.

Hi

I have a M8 android box,  through my internet router, got  off ebay , off seller droidsticks, his boxes come ready to go , but i wiped his software and installed latest xbmc  and tv addons , as my box kept crashing,  now watching latest films , box sets of tv series, TV channels  (although most tv channels are live the quality of some of these is pretty poor),  and lots of other stuff,   and loads of sports, i still retain basic package with virgin though, but high speed internet to keep the buffering down on the box.

if you get one of these you need certain add ons and it is a learning curve installing but once done then its happy viewing, alot of info is on you tube

I've had Apple TV, Roku & most recently a chromecast, they all offered varying degrees of usefulness, I supposed my favourite was the Roku teamed up with LMWT  (1chan I think)  -  which basically gave to access to pretty much everything you could ever want movies wise,  unfortunately though it all got blocked.

Unfortunately though, I ran out of HMDI ports on my TV, so when I bought a PS4 the Chromecast got disconnected, I've been meaning to buy a switch,  but I have to say I am not sure if I'm going to bother. I'm quite enjoying the convenience of just downloading what I want and putting it on USB stick now & plugging it straight into the TV.

My TV has a USB socket, its proving really handy now!  -  Another thing I did for a while was stream to the Xbox 360 via an app called PS3 Media Server  http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/

Not sure how easy it is on a PC but on the Mac its simple, simply install the program on your computer & give it permission to access the files with your media on, then you can browse & stream your PC's content from the Xbox's "videos" app.  Works quite well.

If you're not happy with your Sky package cost ring them and threaten to leave. They will put you strait through to the department that deals with and explain to them that you are not happy with your bill.

I have done this for the last 5-6 years just before Christmas each year and always end up with a decent discount. Currently have: -

Sky HD full bundle
Multiroom HD + HD box
line rental + unlimited calls anytime
fiber broadband

I think the full price cost is about £75. Got it discounted down to £38

I have an apple TV and its great use it to stream all of Skygo from my Laptop to a HD TV its great as it basically mirrors your desktop using an app or airplay if your on apple. For £70 I don't think you get a great deal with it but least the streaming is worth it.

you have to look into either android box with xbmc, modbro, showbox and movietube , and you can virtually watch anthing that is broadcast, and you can also install on your pc or mobile phone if you have a large enough data usage ,if you are unsure what all this is just go on youtube and tap in any of the names to view what I am talking about you even get pay for view in all sports and all for free you can even watch the latest release films and tv series .

its great but no different than running xbmx or kodi as its now called on a pc and then running add-ons like Navix or icefilms , a lot of these sites get taken down as mashup did recently , but I would still have the box anyway as I can browse use youtube, iplayer , play games  use it for playing downloaded content , but anything where you get free pay tv services will be temporary.

great replies everyone thanks so much.

As this seems the way things are going it may help others. Amazon fire £63 at the moment (till saturday)  looks decent value but im tempted to go more advanced.

I got myself an Apple TV recently. I'm a big apple user so it made sense.

I use it mainly for Netflixs and streaming movies from my PC but the iPhone/iPad mirroring is really good if you want to show something on the big screen.

I'm living at my parents at the minute and I don't get much control over the TV so don't use it as much as I'd like. When I get my own place I'll use it all the time. I have iTunes Match turned on too so my entire music library is available through the TV.

The only issue is when I send stuff to it from the ipad/iPhone the TV doesn't automatically switch to the Apple TV. Not sure if a modern TV would or if it's the age of my parents TV.

As an aside, the latest firmware on the Sky HD Box allows you to 'throw' photos from your smartPhone or tablet (running the Sky+ app) at your TV,  OK its just photos,  but its really great, seamless & they just appear over whatever you are watching on your sky box, no need to select channels or anything like that.
If Sky were ever to support casting video in the same way it would be awesome, but this is very unlikely for obvious reasons.
