Why can't we get our calories from junk food?

In line with some of the other debates thats going on this week..... why does it matter what you eat??

Why should we avoid junk food and sweets etc???

I'm not really talking about gaining muscle and I know there'd be health issues, but I just mean gaining or losing fat.

If it's just a case of cals in vs cals out, why does it matter what you eat?

Is it the fact that junk food tends to be high in calories and sends you over your daily limit, or is it the way the food is used and stored?

It is a combination of factors

WHAT constitues those calories - what types and amounts?
What FORM do they come in and what is the knock on effect for, say, insulin regulation?
What OTHER more advantageous foods could you be eating instead but aren;t?
What 'ANTINUTRIENTS' (an over used word) are in these foods that you take in along with the nutrients?
What is MISSING from these foods?

When you see a food which you have to ask

    1) what has been taken out of this food
    2) what has been added
    3) how has this food been chemically modified
    4) what could I be eating instead and,
    5) what are the implications for me?

It;s a combination of weighing up how good the food is and the food displacement questions.

I'm guessing the main reason people get fat from junk food is the amount of calories these foods contain?

The calories, damaged nutrients and poor quality/balance of nutrients i would say.

May be all well and good eating low fat food but in some cases it's rammed with sugar to compensate.

People get fat for many reasons, food choices are just one component of dietary behaviour many of which have an impact. It's a big question.

What you can say though is

    1) they are usually very nutrient dense
    2) often they aren't very filling due to lack of fibre (this related directly and compounds to no. 1 of course)
    3) they're often tasty, cheap, well promoted, take minimal prep time and slip down like a beauty.

I'd imagine bad food would not fulfil your nutrious requirements leaving you possibly malnourished with a weak immune system and probably more susceptible to common colds and so forth. Just what I 'imagine', which may well be a load of rubbish.

Interms of fat loss, yes you can lose weight on mcdonalds and kebabs.

Just theyll lack vitamins, minerals, perhaps provide to low levels of protein and very high levels of saturates fats with little or no omega 3/EFA's.
So basically its health, i guess if you add whey you'd hit your protein requirements too so that'd be ok.

Perhaps you should watch morgan spurlocks film

    it's not basically health

a succesful weight loss/ body comp plan is one that has long term sustainability

a succesful weight loss/ body comp plan is one that has long term sustainability - Which is down to whom, the individual whose sustaining this period of weight loss correct?

Therefore you cant debate that, as some people can starve themselves and others crumble an hour into fasting and eat some cakes.
So what are you exactly debating?

I could live on mcdonalds, its tasty.

it is very esasy to underestimate/overestimate the kcals in junk food

allowing people to eat what they want but asking them to eat less does not address the issues that many people have with junk/comfort food

Your quoting me, then talking about something i didnt talk about.
I said we'd probably notice health issues, not wheter we'd not be able to calorie count our bigmacs, address our mental issues or maintain the diet for a long time.

    The question was based on
but I just mean gaining or losing fat.

He will lose fat if he eat below calories on maccy d's, kebabs, turkey twizzlers, whatever.

So im not sure why your quoting me in the first place ?

    Interms of fat loss

i agree. in terms of fat loss yes

for me fat loss and long term weight are similarly related

    as such

a succesful weight loss/ body comp plan is one that has long term sustainability

    that's why i quoted you

    i wasn't debating with you

i was answering Which is down to whom, the individual whose sustaining this period of weight loss correct?

    Ah k,
Sorry it just seemed like you was diagreeing with me but then talking about a different point.

I agree, its going to install bad habits,
probably make you feel like crap,
probably cause health problems and cost a fair ammount of cash (which would be one factor affecting long term sustainability for many) plus a tonne of other things.

for many years i ate alot of junk food, and it was a mainstay of my diet, i gained weight, i didnt get fat, my cholesterol is reasonable.

you can do it and it does work, people can argue about poor nutritional content etc but fact is it will still work.

but its possible to get the results and be healthier at the same time through good diet, though its harder the clean route.

Should also add that i've got 3 friends who (ok they ran cycles so its different to natural), but they'd bulk up on ALOT of takeaway as they knew they just needed calories.
It was pretty much 4meals a day, atleast 1-2 were take out or some kind (Lunch mc d's, pizza, subways, whatever) or dinner would be chinese or whatever.

Theyd no idea of protein requirements, they had a protein shake after their workout though (Seems its just general gym knowledge) and grew very well.

The bodys pretty amazing, so as daz said you'd probably do ok tbh. If i was a really hard gainer and needed say 5000kcals, i wouldn't mind having the odd burger to help bump the calories up.
Although im not, and i love nuts and juicy steaks so would chose them instead

    R321, nah just baffled me.
    Stick around we love you

those genetically quite lean have lower leptin levels and a better sense of control/partitioning

not quite so easy for those not so lucky

Yeah worth noting that all three of these guys have always been skinny, i'd describe them all as ecto.
So steroids affect partitioning etc also?

    Id just get fat tbh
