Wide grip chins

Hi

Just started doing wide grip chins as part of my new 5x5 program. However I can bearly do 3 reps on my first set and with fairly poor form. I find that I cant complete the movement i.e I can just about get the top of my head inline with my hands but cant complete the movement and my shoulders crunch.

Should I just keep going and gradualy my strength will improve or should I stick with the pulldown machine?

Also as my shoulders crunch and pop when do this on the chinning bar or pulldown machine are there any remedies for this or should I maybe switch to narrow grip chins?

If your gym has a machine for assisted chins use that until you can do them unassisted.

If not try doing 5 sets of 1, then 5 sets of 2, etc until eventually you can do 5 sets of 5.

Be very patient and never compromise on good form - could take you 6 months or more to build up to 5x5.

Dunno if anyone saw that channel 4 documentary last year on 'free runners' but the dude that pioneered that used to pull himself up on objects (urban structures) and had a monty set of lats. I'd say pronated chins would definately help widen lats.

    Cheers chaps

Unfortunately the gym doesn't have an assisted chins machine. Anyone know how I can stop my left shoulder from crunching when I do chins - maybe a good way of warming up or something.

Ask another fellow guy in your gym to assist you during your set for chins. Once you reach the 3rd rep, ask him to push you up either from your upper back or from your shoes.

Personally I'd say just keep going. Next week you'll do 4x reps, etc, etc. You WILL get stronger as you keep at it and your form will improve. Just keep eating & resting right and you'll be fine. As long as you can do 1x rep then keep chinning unassisted and your strength will progress.
