Wii vs Xbox vs PS3 - Which to get for a games newbie?!

Hi all, despite just turning 30, my image of video gaming is based on Sega Mega Drives and Nintendo 64s! I haven't really played a video game in about 14 years. However, I was at a house friend's recently and a bunch of us ended up playing on his Wii. Anyway, following on from the experience the missus and I have decided to buy a Wii or something similar so that we can start doing activity-games, like Wii Sports, in the evening instead of just watching TV and/or reading. Thing is I know virtually nothing about the new generation of games consoles. My younger brother has advised me to go for a PS3, while another brother has advised me the Xbox is miles ahead of the other two. My friend, meanwhile, maintains that Wii is the best. I've done a little bit on-line researching and can't decide between Wii or Xbox. I don't think PS3 is for me and my missus. IA I correct in think PS3 and Xbox are more suitable for playing traditional video games (things like "Call of Duty"), while Wii is better for "activity" group games such as tennis, bowling, boxing etc? As always, advice and opinion valued. Cheers

The Wii is for women who are too lazy to go to a gym, they use it for a week then never again. It only gets turned on if friends are round having a drink at weekends.

horses for courses. wii wont match the graphics that the Ps3 & Xbox have, however thats not the point of it,  it is a console that you can use to have loads of fun with if you have people over etc, ten pin bowling etc, we have one and when we have parties its usually out at some point and is a good laugh.

I have a PS3 too for more traditional gaming, I couldnt fault it as it does everything and more, good gaming, media centre, blu-ray etc, free online gaming.

X-Box is meand to be just as good for games but you have to pay to use the online gaming.

If it was me I would get a wii for the lounge for social stuff and a PS3 for your games room - well thats what I did and its a nice balance.

I'm getting the impression that the Xbox offers the best of both world's. ie, it allows users to play good-quality traditional video games but also offers Wii-style "activity" games. Is that reasonably accurate? What I really want to know is, does Xbox allow users to play Wii-style games in addition to more traditional video games that I associate with PS2.

I can see my games room, err, I mean office, getting well-used soon!

I think you would need the x-box kinect stuff to play it like a wii.... thats meant to be very good but I dont have any experience of it.

Xbox IMO - our Wii is fairly redundant these days, typically, and there's about 3 PS3 exclusive games I would be arsed about.

Xbox kinect looks to have huge potential - played a few games on it, boxing is beyond superb IMO, spot on!

Xbox seems to be the most popular, but, bearing in mind it's my missus who'll be using it the most, the 360 is first and foremost for  traditional games, and doesn't offer "activity" games such as Wii Sports, is that right?

Anybody recall me predicting that if I ever got round to purchasing an xbox I'd probably play on it for a couple of weeks then get bored and never use it again?

Purchased it xmas week, played on it until the new year and haven't touched it since lol

I should have gone for that weighted vest and new kettle bell set!

Can't stop playing guitar hero on xbox

Got quite a few games like blur, forza 3, cod etc but just can't put down the guitar! Really good fun with a few people playing at once.

Just bought live via the Dashboard for £23.99 for 12 months which I think isn't too bad, from someone who plays pc games online and thinks it should be free!

Can Wii be used for more traditional gaming? Things like Mario Bros and shoot-em ups?! Or is it used strictly for Wii Sports-type activity games?

Yes but the Wii gets old - fast.

There are plenty of games on the Xbox Live Arcade you can download, ones from your youth, Sonic, GoldenAxe, Streets of Rage etc etc.

    Disregard the Wii.

Xbox is ok - the fanboys will press on about exclusive titles.  This to mask the fact the the PS3 is in-fact the superior beast!  Online gaming is free as opposed to paid for, it looks better, and it has a bluray player for your home entertainment system.

    PS3 FTW!!!

If you want a console that offers both a great gaming experience for yourself and also wireless fun for your Mrs then the Xbox with Kinnect is by far the best option for you.
