Will the money in my bank account be safe?

I applied to open a basic current account last week and I got a letter this morning confirming that my new account is now open.

The problem is the letter came in a sealed plastic envelope from Royal Mail saying 'Sorry but this envelope has been damaged whilst in our care'.

The letter obviously had my name and address on it, but it also had my new account number and sort code for my new account.

It didn't contain any cards or chequebooks as they're being sent seperately. Royal Mail added 'If anything has been stolen or damaged please call our customer helpline and we will investigate further'.

There was nothing physical to steal in the letter, but how can I know that someone hasn't taken my new account number/sort code, and if they have what can they do with it?

I can't get to the bank until saturday to ask them, but I'm not sure now if it's safe to put money in.

Does anyone know about this stuff?

It's not safe in a bank.  You should give it to me for safe keeping.  Cause you know, no one knocks off 'old Tony.

Can't you call the bank? You should be fine as you can get to the bank before anybody can get the chance to set anything up that would take money out of your account

Phone the bank mate. Their call centres are probably open now. If it's a big bank, it's 24 hour phone answering.

If I nick your account details, I can be you for the purposes of diverting funds.

Hello, can you confirm your name, address, account number, sort code and DoB please. The electoral roll gives thieves your DoB.

The thing is I don't actually have any money in there yet. This letter is just confirmation that my account has been approved and to give me my account number/sortcode so that I can start paying money in.

I'm assuming that without having any money in the account there's not much fraudsters can do?

I was going to wait until I can get up there on saturday to try and sort it out. If I call the bank then I can't see what they would be able to do ?

You definately have to phone them.

I'd be reluctant to use it if you think someone has been fiddling with your details.  Jeremy Clarkson springs to mind.

To all intents and purposes they've maybe been looking for something more valuable in the letter and discarded it when they seen it was just a boring letter, however they could have your address, name, sort code and acc number.  A persistent thief could now try to get some more of your personal details, then you would be open to attack.

    OK thanks guys.

I gave them a call and spoke to a member of their 'fraud team'.

She assured me that with the type of account it is, it's very unlikely that I would have any money taken out.

They haven't got my card or chequebook, and I'm protected if they were to set up a direct debit in my name.

They do have my details, and with that I suppose there is the risk of identity fraud, but that's the risk we all take.

    Cheers guys!

It's fine. If someone wanted to amass bank details, they'd work in a place that set up direct debits. Not chancing their arm on opening random letters. Account numbers and sort codes are not secret stuff.
