Wise words.

Strength is the result of many factors, and not the least of which, surely, includes some things beyond your control - just as genetics influence your appearance, they influence your performance. After genetics, there is a common tendency to dismiss anyone who's stronger than you are by saying he's a liar, a cheat, or a druggie - some people make things simple and just claim all three of anyone who beats them, and certainly there are people who can honestly be said to be any or all of these things.
Yet, for most people, most of the time, getting stronger has little to do with their genetics and even less to do with cheating, lying or drugs. It has to do with whether they seek, receive and act on good advice, and, most important of all, whether or not they are willing to push themselves.

I reluctantly have to disagree disgree Al, because they are fine sentiments. I disagree because it would mean that British Olympic lifters were less willing to push themselves or less motivated than Bulgarian, Greek or Turkish lifters.

I cannot accept that we as a nation of men are inherently weaker than the men of these other nations. Whilst there are state sponsored drugs programmes, the drugged athletes will prevail over their non drug using competitors.

I am aware that there are a whole host of other reasons why we are so unsuccessful at O lifting yet the drug issue must surely be the greatest reason of all.

I can see your point Tarw but it is clear to me that he is not saying that people are never beaten by others due to drug use. He does say that "there are people who can honestly be said to be any or all of these things" (liars, cheats or druggies).
He also qualifies the final statement, (which you might rightly consider idealistic), with "most people, most of the time" rather than applying it to everyone, all the time.
I agree that athletes from certain nations will have a prescribed chemical advantage and i am certain that Mr Strossen knows this as well as anyone, after all he has attended more weightlifting competitions than perhaps anyone else has in the last few decades.

and also weight lifting being such a respected sport in many eastern european countries the weightlifters can get state sponsorship to train - probably most brittish high level lifters have to keep their regular jobs to support themselves.
