alternative exercise to squats

hey guys...

Do you have any recommendations for exercises that are equally as good to barbell squats? Something will get the compound movement and work the same muscles as good. Reason being, I always have a tough time doing barbell squats as I have weak knees and it is too difficult some times.

"weak knees" - I hear that all the time from people who don't want to do squats - what does it even mean?

however 23biceps23 - accepting that you in actual fact do have weak knees I doubt that front squats or lunges are going to be much easier on them. BB squats are an awesome excercise, you should really do them. Though I can understand why people are scared to, they make you feel sick and hurt for days!

Why don't you just start off light and move up gradually and strengthen your knees?

Chez I appreciate your point that squats are an excellent excercise but some people are not able do them for various reasons they may have problems with vertabrae in there back or as in the original post probs with there knees or even neck .. or in my case I got a massive headache due to my BP going sky high when doing them its only just happened now ive got to a fairly good weight .. so im taking the general advice and not doing the Squats for a bit - however just like the above I still need some alternatives to keep my legs and back in tow with the rest of my body

    Thanks for the responses..

Any other recommendations for exercises to equally work the body?

In my case, CHEZ, I actually do have weak knees and it means, i have WEAK KNEES!!
I am not complaining as if I am looking to get out of squats. My knees have a strong pain in them when doing squats. Too much basketball when I was younger caused them to burn out a bit. I even try to avoid doing bicycle cardio as this usually has a strong burning feeling on my knees too.

But, I will take that recommendation and take it easy on the weight while doing squats . Hopefully, I can build overall strength and support in them...and get rid of the feeling of them wanting to give up and collapse.

If you have week knes than I would suggest using machines (now listen before you boo me) do leg curs, extensions and seated calf raises. These machines put the least pressure on your knees. However have you talked to your physician? Let him examine your knees and if he says they are good then there is no reason not o do squats because there are no full body lifts that don't stress your knees and work your legs.

Fair dues, I'm more than willing to accept you that you are an exception to the majority of people who say that. However still not clear what would make a knee weak permanently and I'm sure that they could be strengthened over time - but then again I'm no physician. Have you seen anybody about your knees? I think it would be a good idea if they are that bad TBH!

I don't think there are any exercises that can match squats.
However, any of the suggestions already made are valid and could work for you. Hack squats can also be good.
Ideally you want to base your training around the big heavy compounds. If you can't squat then it's not the end of the world if you can still do some of the others: deads, rows, chins, benches, dips etc

Believe it or not leg extensions put more pressure on the knees than squats.

Let it sink.... I can swim.

People always complain that people make excuses to get out of squatting. You can't understand what it's like to have difficulty squating unless u actually have problems. If it's hurting ur body to squat, then it's a bad idea to do them -- this is a valid excuse. Everyone has different body compositions/injuries from the past that influence their squatting abilities. People also may have weak points that can lead to injury if they continue to squat.

I think it would be smart to back off, strengthen ur knees, then squat again later. Work on ur form as well to make sure it's correct. But if ur knees are hurting u to squat, they're not just going to magically get better if u keep squatting. They will only get worse until u fix the problem. I know this from experience.

About the bike... if ur knees are burning when u do it, this is not an injury. This is ur knees getting worked out. It's not a bad thing at all.

I have bad knees, but I still do squats, and lift as much as I can. I have tried everything in the past just to try and avoid doing squats. But mate i'm affraid there aint anything out there that will build your legs like the squat, hence why i'm back doing them again.

Its taken me absolutely ages to get the hang of squats but now I've got it I love them, my advice is just to keep trying them, vary the weight and depth until your comfortable.

As for weak kness, you say you get a pain, I don't understand how your knees can actually be in pain, they are a bone after all? Do you mean your vastus medialis(however you spell it) which is the muscle just above your knee bone on the inside of your leg? If that hurts its entirely normal, it just means its weak and you need to beef it up a bit.

I squat, yet i still seem to have a problem with my lower back, as in i aches like mad and also around glutes and hips for a couple of days (this is after deads too), but I know how good they are for me so I continue to do them.

I have spend time each day stretching my back in various ways (done at home) to try to keep the aching to a minimum.

BencherRdg, I would be careful. If u think those pains are bad now, wait ten years. You won't be able to stand up straight.

Box squats are a good way to work on correct form. I have had back problems and knee problems in the past, but when I do box squats I feel no pain at all. They still work my legs great.

    Squats -- 475lbs
Deadlifts -- Romanian DL (only ones I can do with an injured back) -- 150lbs dumbells
    Bench -- 325lbs

its just major stifness than pain, but its just bloody uncomfortable and i can be seen in front of the TV at home doing twists and side bends quite often to loosen up....
