bodyweight exercises, functional strenght?

I was messing around trying to work on my handstanding ability so I can start HS pushups and I got to wondering if other types of bodyweight exercises could be good? For example, my gym lifts although not very much, are not terrible but when I tried a planch pushup, or a couple other gymnastic type lifts I found myself either not being able to do them or struggling alot... is there worth to adding in types of exercises like this for functional strength?

About the chins... I always thought that palms away was better for building upper backs (lats etc). Ive seen pictures of people doing them with palms towards them. Is that alot of bicep help? I figured that palms away would be better for back because it would hit back a little more than using your biceps to kind of "curl" yourself up. I know i'm wrong I am just wondering why it is like that.
