breathing from the stomach?

wasnt too sure where to post this for the best response.

how do you breathe from your stomach and what are the benefits as opposed to "normal" breathing.
i know we have some martial artists here so if they could respond also it would be great.

cheers

i assume you mean inhaling to use the full capacity of the lungs. It is like the depth divers who can fill their lungs to almost 100% capacity where as the average human uses (i believe) around about 30% of their full lung capacity.

Not sure how you train this but you have to get used to exahling fully and then taking very long, depp breathes.

Correct me if im wrong though.

As my T'ai Chi teacher would say... yes, the Chinese are partial to this, as are other martial artists. There's a common notion that power comes from a centre-point (called variously Tan Den, T'an Tien or Hara) just below your navel, and that expressing that power is vitally linked with breathing. Which isn't far from the mark.

Belly breathing works your transversus, increases the amount of air in your lungs, and encourages the formation of that strong abdominal box (formed by abs and back muscles) which is an essential component of core strength.

He used to say that the main reason most Westerners didn't belly-breathe was that we were too vain. Certainly when I'm lifting, I belly-breathe, get good results, and have a gut like a bellows!

    Hi bro
Since i had an accident at work this time last year in which i damaged my phrenic nerve my diaphram has been paralisyed in the up position.
On asking my GP and Specialists they said that the body would adaptand to a certain it has.
    Ive developed this shallow breathing.
Do you think i could gain extra lung capacity through tai.

all I know is that in boxing, don't hold you breath when getting hit in the belly.
If theres no air in there you can't get winded.

boots, certainly i'd say that one of the inner martial arts or related things - t'ai chi, yoga, that sort of thing - could help. You'd need a decent instrutor (crap ones can't handle people with weird bodies). Let me know where in the country you are offlist and I'll dig out the contact details of your local t'ai chi bod from my style.

A technique used in meditation is to place your hand on your stomach, as you breathe in allow the stomach to expand outwards, check this with your hand and allow about 5 seconds to do this. As you exhale draw navel back towards the spine and exhale for a count of 10 seconds. This method encourages that deep belly breathing and if practiced regularly it breaks the habit of that shallow thoracic breathing.

Yoga breathing is similar. Lie down with your legs straight, and press your lower back into the floor. Put your fingers on your navel. Breathe in and out a few times. Next time when you inhale aim to fill your lungs from the bottom so your tummy balloons out, then fill the middle of the lungs and finally the chest. Breath in for a count of 5. Now exhale for a count of 10, letting the air out of the tummy first, the the middle and finally the top of the lungs. Repeat at least 5 times.

At my UFC style martial arts class the trainer is very insistent on breathing from the stomach. We do a brething drill where you put your tongue on your upper jaw (roof of mouth) and breath in for 4 seconds...while you breathe in, you elevate arms to stretch position above your heads, then hold for 8 seconds, and then slowly release for 14-16 seconds....Helps with stress and is a really good breathing excercise....

breathing from the stomach is quite benificial to most martial arts, although i do not advocate it when running etc as there is no benifit.

block, you can increase your lung capacity by doing things like hill sprints.

Coz I'm asthmatic I've tried quite a few different methods of breathing to try to help it so I don't need medication. In asthmatics it's not breathing in thats a problem it's the breathing out that is diffficult, (contrary to popular beleive) so by exhaling slowly for 10 seconds it aleviates the problem to a degree. Do I sound like a "Breathing" bore????? I must get a life!!!! LOL.

P.S. By the way The Block. Breathing in this deep controlled manner oxygenates the blood more efficiently and energises you. I read somewhere it keeps you eternally young too, thats why I only look 25 but I'm 63 really!
