bulking/losing fat / alcohol question?

Ok

I work hard at the gym, I eat very well but do no cardio and have 1-4 heavy drinking sessions per month. I know how bad alcohol is for bodybuilding/empty calories/body fat blah blah. But I am not prepared to give that up.

My trainer said that it is best to bulk then strip the fat. However I don't care about this advice I want to continue to bulk but get rid of some body fat to reveal my abs, but still have be able to drink 1-4 times a month.

What is the best way to achieve this? Ie what cardio, when and how much. also is it true that if i do cardio would it be best to up my protein intake.

I appreciate that people say u can't lost fat and build muscle due to loosing muscle why dieting etc. But i am prepared to whatever routine to reveal my abs but without changing my diet regardless.  Is skipping good?

You've been given some very strange advice, firstly it's not best to bulk and then strip fat, you are likely to lose all the muscle you've built this way (and get disheartened and give up and live your life as a fat man) and secondly it's not impossible to lose fat and build muscle at the same time. In fact it's no too difficult.

Are you prepared to carry out some damage limitation when drinking?   E.g. spirits and a diet mixer would be the least calorific.  Then do plenty of cardio to burn these empty calories off.

thanks . I tend to have wine instead of beer, as I hear that is better. Probably rubish . But you say do cardio plenty. I don't know how much , what type as in hitt or walking. i don't want to lose too much muscle. and do i eat more.

sorry it is a lot to ask

Well that's all good and well, but unfortunately for you diet is by far the most important factor in doing this. It is much easier to just bulk first and then cut later, that's why most people do it. I believe it is possible to bulk and burn fat at the same time, but it will come down to extremely fine tuning your diet. And I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet, I simply don't understand my body well enough yet. But there is no chance of doing it if you're unwilling to change your diet, I know that much.

Listen to the advice of the two posters above me, they seem to know a lot!

i completely agree but other than binging up to 4 times a month my diet is fine. I am just worried about the cardio and losing muscle.

Ah I see. To be honest I don't even really think drinking a few times a month will make that much of a difference. Keep your cardio at low intensity (60% of max heart rate I think) and it's highly unlikely that you'll go catabolic.

How much wine do you drink in one session and are you aware of how many calories you are drinking?

You will need to counteract these calories by doing cardio and if you do steady state cardio, you should find this is not going to nab all your muscle!

Not trying to be an idiot here:

You say your diet is fine? But you dont know how many calories you are drinking, drinks should still be taken into consideration while diet planning, otherwise you may find it hard to reach the goals.

steady 50-65% of your max heart, this is optimum fat burning zone. Basically there is a higher proportion of fat being used as fuel than any other intensity within this zone.

You just need to burn off more calories than you consume and you will lose fat, drinking alcohol, eating **** foods, makes this harder.

You should calculate the calories you are drinking in alcohol at least in a general sense.

It is unrealistic to think you can not do cardio and drink a high volume of alcohol (which may or not be the case, you won't know until you do the math) and lose weight.

I am not going to advocate anyone avoiding cardio, either through laziness or a misplaced belief that they will lose all the muscle they put on. It doesn't work that way unless you are doing a LOT of cardio.
I do around 2 1/2 hours of cardio- a mixture of steady pace and HIIT- a week and don't lose muscle.
You just have to eat right (and drink smart), keep hitting the weights, train intensely and stick to the program.

A few pints a month isn't going to hurt you though- I probably have two units of alcohol a week- it isn't an issue. (I have a bacardi and diet coke which is about as few calories as you can have from an alcoholic drink).
Having 20 pints in a night though, and then going for a jumbo kebab is going to be more of an issue.
If you are doing that 4 times a month (ie once a week) then you could be consuming 5000 calories- basically all the calories you are losing by eating right and training.

Try cutting your alcohol- nothing is as much fun as being fit feels.
Maybe go on a 12 week program- give yourself a goal to reach and reward yourself with a night out at the end of it.
I do it all the time- it is fun to do and I find I enjoy myself more when it is an occasional thing rather than weekly.

    Good luck with it.

I train with a lot of rugby players at my gym. They're obviously pretty big guys, and cut enough to have all their abs on show/vascularity going on... yet they get pissed at least a few times/week. When I say pissed, I mean absolutely pissed out of their head... many pints, shots, etc... not just a casual drink. Obviously they're not going to win a competition at 6% bf, but they're probably sitting comfortably at 10-12%.

Makes me wonder how much alcohol actually hinders gains.
