criminal record going to usa

Hi,
Does anyone know anything about going through usa customs from the uk, with a criminal record?
ive been told no matter how minor, you need to get a visa waiver from the american embassy in london.
If the person with the record doesnt mention it on the i94w form you fill in on the plane, what is the likelyhood of anyone finding out?
I have been in touch with a lot of ppl who say they have been, not mentioned their record and have been fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

There is a couple of situations i know of with friends in similar situations, only one of which was going to the States though.

Nothing mentioned, and no problems that i'm aware of.

One of the people was only going to a country within the EU, but definitely should not of been leaving the UK, again mentioned nothing and no problems.

Personally, i would just go and if anything comes of it just be nice and simply plead ignorance.

obviously if u are a convicted drug smuggler i would resist from doing it again.

apart from that i wouldnt worry too much unless u are carrying something .. just say u forgot

i heard the same so best thing is to ring the us embassy and see where you stand.
i've heard stories of people being refused entry and sent back next plane.

As long as they didnt serve a jail sentence for something serious they should be ok in my experience. Wouldnt worry if its a minor crime.

It depends on just how bad you've been...My cousin went to Florida for Xmas last year, got to O'Hare to change planes, and go through immigration. They scanned his passport, then allowed him to wave bye to his missus and kids who continued their holiday before they sent him packing on the first flight back to the UK. He has been a bit of a bad boy in the past..drugs, football fighting and theft issues...Not surprising they didnt let him in at all really, shame it wasn't Australia he was visiting, a record would have helped there!

On the other hand, I know of someone else who has been frequently, nevert mentioned his GBH conviction, and never had any trouble!

You'll be ok buddy, I know a few people who have been to the States with a criminal record and no questions have been asked.
