do you HAVE to blend protein shakes?

...due to my current lifestyle its much more convenient if I could just get my flask of water, pour in the whey protein, and stir enthusiastically, rather than get blender out, blend, clean the blender etc.

Just wondering if this would lessen the effect of the protein?

I have explained the situation, and reasons for the 'on the go' diet, in my previous post. Certain things are beyond my control, so I adjust. Excuse me for wanting a protein shake.

If the protein is an easy mixing protein you don't really need a blender etc, if its a thick one with casein and xanthan gums and thickeners in, it will clump without a blender or shaker.

Buy a few shaker cups, chuck them in the dishwasher when done. Easy.

The other advantage is that you whip less air into the shake than a blender does so don't up as bloated after drinking it.

You can also take a shaker cup with some powder out and about with you, all you need is a tap and you got a shake ready. No need to blend.

But then if you're taking a shaker out and about with you, you could also pack a coolbox with chicken and rice in it, just cook twice as much when you are at home.

Get a couple of shakers, works just as well as a blender with the vast majority of whey products.

You don't need a blender to mix protein shakes. Just get a decent shaker bottle.

I never use a blender for mixing up whey or casein powders.

Only if I'm making smoothies with banana, protein, oats , peanut butter etc; thenh you need a blender.

Good quality whey such as ON 100% you dont even need a shaker, just a fork will mix it satisfactorily.

Other thing I find helps is to add the water first, then the powder on top.

Powder first tends to lead to some staying stuck on the bottom of the shaker. Get yourself a couple of small tupperware canisters and you can carry the water in the shaker and the powder alongside ready to mix on the go. I did it sat in traffic on the M62 this morning. ;-)

That's all very true. Water or milk or whatever first, and then the powder.

Back to the original post- really, I don't think you need to worry... its not like stirring or blending or any way you mix it is going to denature the protein in any way, so relax

Yep only excessive heating will start to denature the protein.

Actually does anyone have any info on that...for instance if I have hot milk at bedtime, does the heating reduce the protein content by any appreciable amount?

I'm headed to Costa Rica.  I will be off the grid.  I want to drink a shake after surfing.  So this is a helpful discussion.

I just attempted to mix this organic protein:
    https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Organic-Vitamins-Probiotics/dp/B0031JK96C?th=1

    with this chia seed:
    https://www.amazon.com/Nutiva-Organic-non-GMO-Premium-Black/dp/B00AQFGL3O/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1530235246&sr=8-5&keywords=nutiva%2Bblack%2Bchia&th=1

and 8 oz of water using a hand shaker from GNC like this:
    http://www.gnc.com/mixers-shakers-and-bottles-1/419162.html?cgid=mixers-shakers-and-bottles-1#start=1

Drank it in 5 seconds.  It was not lumpy.  It tasted fine.

    No problem.

You do not have to use the blender every time. I shake vigorously in a bottle and drink. Everything is fine and the time saved
