ebay purchase - what was going on here?

Bought a £70 book from an online bookstore for £20 plus £5 postage. Brand new but damaged cover.

The invoice only came to £20 though.

So, paid that.

And waited.

Got an email through my normal email account (not ebay message) asking for the £5 postage charge.

I replied saying sure, no problem, guess you forgot to add it to the invoice total. If you could just submit the request via ebay PM and I'll pay the fiver immediately.

Now received a message saying you're not having the book, here's a refund.

Some questions:

Aren't I legally entitled to it? I'll never find it at that price new again.

Why did he email through personal emails?

What's the (seeming) problem with asking for the postage money through ebay - he doesn't pay commission on postage to ebay does he?

He has 100% positive feedback and the message I sent him about asking for the fiver via ebay was very polite.

Ideas?

a sale on ebay is a legally binding contract i believe. But enforcing it would be expensive i would imagine

Righty i live on Ebay lol, heres what id do
Leave Negative FB explaining everything follow up on it if it dont all fit
Replying through personal emails just means hes contacted you through his buyer info email, i always do.
He will be charged a fee with paypal because you allready paid the £20 seperately
It is a contract you could take it up with Ebay but he would only say it was lost/damaged then theres nothing they will or can do TBH
