No idea about his gym performance, but he was a BIG man. His son used to compete in Lincolnshire athletics at the same time as I did (although I don't remember meeting him), and so on occasion one would see Capes senior strolling around the track. This was after he had retired. I don't remember being struck my his muscularity, but rather his overall size - very tall and very wide (especially around the middle!)

Kaz labelled himself the strongest man in the world and geoff capes the strongest athlete in the world. Capes power was tremendous, lets not forget he still held the UK shot putt record up until 2 years ago!

Capes was one of the strongest shot putters in his time, i'd heard around 5-600lb bench and 7-800lb squat, not as strong as the east german Udo Beyer though. Capes could also do around 24s for 200m (he beat brendan foster!), good for a guy over 300lbs and an excellent all round athlete, apparently could be as mean as a rattlesnake though!
