hiit or aerobic in bulk.-add your way

im bulking and i kno many people who are in the same position as me and are not sure which is best, a short sharp hard session, or a longer lighter session. i kno people have mixed opinions and passed discussions have been inconclusive, so i was wondering if everyone who reads this can jus put which type they do. so we can say what the general consencus of people do.
it may not tell us which is the best, but we can see what is most popular.

I just do HIIT for fitness reasons only, I'm not sure if I would gain more or less muscle if I didn't.

IMO If I didn't do HIIT when bulking:
1/my metabolism would be slower which is good for adding muscles
2/my fitness level and all the good things that come with it would be gone which is bad.

At the moment i do a cardio session 2 a week on non-lifting days which consists of :
    run - 15 mins
    bike - 20 mins
    cross trainer - 20 mins
All performed at a moderate pace, i personally haven't tried HIIT but will give it a go when i get fed up with 1 hour long cardio sessions !!

depends on what yo have time for mate. I'm still not convinced that HIIT is any more effective than standard cardio. for me personally tho, standard cardio is best, the only time i have for cardio is after my weights, and i'm buggered if I have enough energy for even ten mins of HIIT, but 40-60 mins, split between the treadmill, bike and elliptical trainers I can handle.

HIIT is monsterous, so i would keep it to a minimum [like 2sessions a week] if you are bulking. HIIT rules.

only 2? if u trained+eat smartly and had carbs before HIIT sessions etc, can u do 3-4 sessions a week while bulking? Jeff Willet (on AST site) does HIIT in the morning and heavy weights in the evening while bulking 3 days a week, i am a bit confused when people say dnt do HIIT to much when bulking.

    well i'll enlighten you then.

#1 i agree that if you can ingest sufficent* kcals then 4 sessions of HIIT is not going to be too detrimental to your gains.
#2 in 30mins of HIIT i reckon you could burn 800kcals at least, thats a lot of protien and carbs you are throwning away for no real reason other than to be fit, which is not his primary interest, getting more mass is.
    #3 you need more rest
#4 it can get in the way of your weight training, which again, whilst bulking is his main poriority. [and don't try to tell me if you've just give it 100% at HIIT that morning your going to be in the mood for squatting later that day!!]
#5 HIIT revs up your metabolism all day and that just wastes yet more precious kcals whilst bulking.

*sufficent kcals in this instance is lots. this is as good a wasted as he is not intested in cutting or getting fit, he is bulking, so why bother eating extra protien and cabs, just to run it off for no reason?????????

thanks for clearing up some things, however what do you think when people do HIIT and weights just to lose bf and build muscle (we assuming diet is adequate cals etc?) is it a double edge sword thinking along these lines? i have been wondering this as i want to remain lean (less BF) during bulking phase but love to remain in lower end digits of BF while bulking aswell. I guess u could say i like seeing my Abs

no matter what u say guys go to the gym to look good for the chicks

no matter what u say guys go to the gym to look good for the chicks ...

to an extent this is true, my lady makes a concerted effort to look good and i feel i should to. but i love getting stronger.

i, like yo want to stay lean and i enjoy being fit, so i personally think that HIIt and weights are perfectly viable for me as i am prepared to wait longer for the mass to come and stay lean in the process than a traditio BBer who bulks at all costs then gets ripped up later. you could say my definitio of bulking is different to others.

right now i do the weights routine listed in the power and strength forum.. have a look, its ace [if i do say so myself]. and throw in HIIT as and when, i don't train with "weeks" as it doesn't fit into my life that well, so if i feel recovered, i'll do it, if not, then i don't. instinctive training its called. some "weekss" i'll do 4 sessions and some "weeks" i'll do none, it really depends on what my body is telling me. although i gave it a beasting after xmas to shed any excess fat[ not that i had/have much]. hope thats of some help pal.

well cheers fella's, its good to get other peoples views. i personally only do cv on off days, and could go for however long, i have been sticking to old fashioned forty-one hr cv sessions, but might give some hiit a try. change things up a little. what do you personally do for a hiit session?

    my current best is:
1minute@MHR and then 4minutes@40-50%MHR repeat. my best is 11mins, so it would pan out thus:

    1minMHR
    4min50%MHR
    1minMHR
    4min50%MHR
    1minMHR
pray for death, prayers nearly answered.

for a begginner i would say, start @ 20-30secondsMHR and about 2-3min 40-5-%MHR. repeat until you can hold that for 20mins and then build it up from there. NEVER REDUSETHE AMOUNT OF REST PERIODS [40-50%mhr].

    rob where is that routine

go into te power and strength forum, look for a thread by me, titled:

    the **FINAL** edit, its done

    my stats are:
weight: 150lbs, height: about 5'8, bf: around the 7-9%mark, although before xmas it was about 6%
    bench/squat/deadlift: 220/260/330lbs

hehee boxer, with the fluffy comedy around the topic there are some intresting things going on in this thread.

rob, is it a good idea to take carbs AFTER HIIT? i mean treat it as another training session no matter if its Weights or cardio??

    whats ur opinion on that?

will the real tony blair, please stand up!
in answer to your question, you would have to tell me if you are bulking or not?
bulking=yes, a lot, with a lot of protien
    cutting=not a lot
yet again i have no idea what you are on about with regards the sentence at the end of your post. never mind.
