how to make my laptop quicker

in the last week my laptop has started being very very slow with its internet connection especally when streaming from youtube or footi streams. I've pretty much cleared my desktop, deleted cookies and history have updated all my drivers, limited the programmes at start up and checked programmes running via task manager. I'm using a proxy to get around the blocks here yes however it was running fine up until about a week ago.

Internet connection test is very very poor when i'm meant to hve 16mb connection whch i do when plugged in (using wireless now)
What could be causing the slowdown in speed?

Virus
wireless network adapter problems?

have you tested your speed here
    http://www.speedtest.net/
also you will find your internet provider
will slow your connection down and think
    you wont notice

Proxy use will make the connection very slow. Sites like Youtube, which is in the top 3 sites in the world will have periods of sluggishness too.

Streaming sites are also subject to demand and can only handle so many connections.

Best bet is to run speed tests.

Nothing wrong with Acer gear mate. Is it slow running non-internet apps?

no seems fine on non tinternet apps,

looked into it more and it seems the guest account still needs a password once a browser is open, i'd need to use the utility settings on the linksy disk to change it but i've already fiddled with settings to change NAT type and i'd have to set them back to default to disable so not really worth it.
I think it just is the proxy but its just confusing as i've had the same proxy for 2 years and its been fine then all of a sudden it really really slows things down.

My Acerbic laptop slowed down almost to a stop a few weeks ago. A Windows update had turned on Windows Defender which was clashing with my anti-virus (Zone Alarm). Turning off Windows Defender cured the problem.

If you still have a connection in some way to teh internet, theirs nothing on a Pc that will actually "slow" a connection...what can make it jumpy is a problem with the browser, on in genreal a **** Laptop, but if you have cleared everything you might wannt try cCleaner, and Malwarebytes....fun a good scan of each then have them clean up.

Windows defender is just a scan like Malewarebytes..a very good one at that..it has nothing to do with Anitvirus and only runs when you ask it to. The only time it goes near the internet is when it downloads updates.

When windows defender switched itself on it took about an hour for my laptop to start up. When I managed to turn defender off the laptop started up normally and has been OK since.
