is this routine any good?

please could someone help with any suggestions or comments?
i was recently seeking advice from a bloke at work who is quite a bit thicker set than i am (i'm 5'11 @ 13 stone and he's bigger) about a routine to get bigger and stronger. the one he's following is as follows:
workout 1
shoulder press
shrug
close grip bench press
curls
crunches

workout 2
deadlift
bench press
lat pull down
squat
calf raises

the bloke trains either 2 or 3 times a week and alternates between the routines each time he works out allowing at least a days rest between workouts.

please could anyone tell me if this routine is any good? and what rep and set scheme would be best suited for size and stregth?

and is sticking with my cardio of running 4 miles in approx 30 minutes twice or 3 times a week o.k. if i want to bulk up? providing i keep my calorie intake to about 3,000 a day

Deadlift and squat in the same workout doesn't sound good.

would the routine be o.k. if deadlift was dropped or if it was alternated with the squat every other workout I.e. do one workout with the squat the next workout with deadlift instead of squat.

There have been a lot of new routines posted up recently. This is definitely one of the best of them. That's not to say I don't have any advice though...

Nowt wrong with squat and d'lift in the same workout if you keep the volume at a sensible level. Not in that order though. Squat first - Always, always, always. Squat, d'lift and bench in the same workout is a little odd though - I would go with something closer to this.

    Workout 1:
    Bench press
    Shoulder press
    Chin-ups or Pull-ups or Bent-over rows
    Weighted sit-ups

    Workout 2:
    Squat
    Deadlift
    Calf raises

I recently posted up a powerlifting assistance routine i.e. a routine for increasing the big 3 lifts without actually using any of them. That might give you some ideas as well.

Do a search for one of FrankieNY's routines Ian. They are good.

Welcome to M.T by the way!
