Yes gumtree, eBay and powerhouse fitness and amazon are quite expensive but they do have 2nd hand section private sellers not from amazon directly

Don't know if this works out cost effective for you.  But maybe getting some olympic dumbell handles with spring clips and some 2.5kg or 5kg dumbell discs.  Might be space efficient as well.

You can buy 20 kilo adjustable spin lock dumbells from Tesco's buying 2 sets maybe a bit expensive but if you can get 40 kilos on one set of dumbells , well let's put it this way I been training for 20 yrs and the heaviest I have are 30k DBs and all I can do with them is deadlifts or rows so they should last a life time, maybe a bit pricy but a good investment

My advice is to buy free weights as cheap as you can. You can buy used weights (i think there is no difference), but dumbbells and barbell are needed

Keep an eye on Ebay, I have built a reasonable collection of weights over time.
Second hand aren`t always that much cheaper than new and you have the expense of collecting them yourself.
But you can pick up good quality weights at reasonable prices.
I did local searches on Ebay and just bought job lots, you don`t always have much choice.
Its worth while buying a decent barbell or two, preferably Olympic then building up your collection of weights as you need them. Just takes a bit of time.

    Ignorance: Reassuringly Expensive.

As others have said Gumtree or local papers.  There are countless people who have bought weights, benches etc with the intention of training at home only for the equipment never to be used.  They then are only to glad to get shot of them and put them in the local paper for sale at rock bottom prices.
