Have you had this pormerly diagnosed?

I would say avoid using it, if it is torn, until fully recovered. there may be some active rest exercises, or recovery exercises you could do but I couldn't personally prescribe them.

Those sorts of things are what some loosely refer to as active rest. You aren't directly straining the area but it is working to a degree....... I have often found such practices useful, and have been able to train almost as per usual so long as I took care not to involve my lower back. That meant a fair bit of machine and supported work and avoiding max effort, but stopped by regressing as such.

3 months for a muscle injury is extreme, i think he is trying to cover his arse!
Dirty is referring to active movements, which are useful in stopping an area from becoming stiff causing inhibition of other muscles due to lack of use. Being lower back there are a few exercises that can be done, but they are hard to explain over the net, simple enough exercises though. http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/lowback/weakback/mobility.php
Try this link, this has a few good exercises. These get the muscles in the area working, but not overly everting them. As with any exercise you do when returning from injury, if it hurts during or following, you need to stop doing them for a while.

That doesn't mean do f*&^ all on it though! Just take it slow and ease yourself back in, you'll know if it feels ok or not!

i have a lower back injury as well, and when i went hospital they couldn't diagnose the problem. I've had to go chiropractice to sort it out. If u have a muscle tear in ur spine then it might be out of place.

Why bother with the hospital? The NHS do a great job for what they can manage, but sports specific injuries are not exactly their strong point! I would have seen a private physio or sports therapist, much more likely to be able to help, not to mention the amount of time they are likely to actually spend spend with you, as opposed to the slap dash efforts of a much rushed NHS therapist or doctor.
Not a huge fan of chiropractors myself, but they work for some people... only so many times you can have your bones clicked about before things start to get a bit too loose though! Backs generally are a pain in the arse, and the majority of the population suffer with them at some point in their lives... might just be a case of getting on with things within your new limits... once things have settled down a bit of course
