middleage spread is spreading help!

i have trained for over 5 years on a keep fit basis, then had 7 month
off due to ill health, the inches piled on and about a stone in weight, ive tried the herbal life diet for a month and lost about an inch off my waist but no weight, i am now on a proteen drink from the gym( been back a week) i have that for breakfast and dinner, and a meal at night(i work full time) i intend to do 30min at least three times a week at the gym,concentrating on stomac and upper body at moment. in between meals i try and drink loads of water, at least two bananas and a apple per day and about four dry rivetas a day (if hunger steps in) so far i appear to be getting "flabbier" round the stomac and waist and not loosing a pound, has anybody got any advise as to how i can loose about 3 inches off my fat bit in the middle and about 2 inch off my waist and a stone in weight, the rest of me i can cope with and tone accordingly

    You need to eat a 'proper' diet to be able to lose weight effectively. The herbalife diet may contain 'nutrients' but it does not contain enough of the fuel and building providers that the body needs. Also due to the lack of calories and infrequent meals you are consuming you will have lowered your metabolism. You need to eat small meals on a frequent basis (approx every 2 hours) containing a good quality protein, small amount of complex carbs. Eat plenty veg of varied sorts and keep drinking lots of water. Once your body gets the right nutrients I'm sure things will start to happen for you. TRy doing a search on the board too for some typical diet days etc

    many thanks for your advise, i guess my next question is what would you suggest as a proper diet, i would welcome some suggestions of "ok" food, i will amend my work outs to include your suggestions.
    (still aching in places i didnt know could ache) so may be a bit painfull and small reps/times to start with. if you are interested i will post my results, as in size/weight loss in 2 weeks(i should be showing results ny then shouldnt i ?) thanks

    you want 3 inches off your middle! dont we all lol
    naaa to be serious you have already been told but its all about diet .....no short cuts just a good diet and exercise.
    But some people respond different to othersas far as diets are concerned, me i like to cut out nearly all carbs(i know atkins has had a lot of stick)but for some people it works and really well,
    when i am cutting i get my main carbs on a morning ..... 2 weetebix and a couple of spoonfuls of wheatbran .....that gives me a lot of fibre which you definetly need but it also gives me the carbs in the morning which gives you more enegy and also lets you burn more fat as the day goes on
    just take it slow you say you have already lost an inch off your waist so just keep it nice and steady and you will benifet from it
