    'By all accounts' Hugh?

All the supps websites that sell glutamine suggest taking it in water or juice.
    Where have you read that?

it does help mate cheers - i'm just necking my post workout shake with added l-glutamine

as i said before most supps websites suggest taking it with water - according to the reflex website it degrades in the presence of whey - looks like it's a separate drink an hour before or after a whey shake

    very interesting!

the first paper is talking about elevated levels - and the abstract doesnt say what elevated is, and its also talking about plasma levels - which are usually tightly regulated.
It is referencing work on glutamate related regulatory pathways in the brain; I am not certain how this  relates to supplemental glutamine, as when taken as a supplement glutamine as singularly fails to raise plasma levels - one reason why studies have pronounced glutamine a dud in terms of being an effective sports supplement.

The reason you dont have glutamine with whey or milk is that other amino acids use the same uptake pathways, and so there is competition, to be optimum you take glutamine on an empty stomach on its own - this means no competition for uptake.

That said plenty of people stick glutamine in postworkout because of the enhanced environment and do see a benefit. - So its optimal vs practical. Personally, get out of bed, down glutamine, make brekky, eat, and then one just before bed - stick one after a workout and get your 15-30g that way :)

When mixing it with shakes completely ruins the taste, it's awful! So I take mine with a shot of water before hand.

@big les - cheers mate - take on an empty stomach - that's only when i wake & rarely not for long before i down a protein shake - how long do you suggest before the shake 10-20mins?

@dr pepper - you can taste it? i've never had a problem with it - daa now that's a different matter - battery acid!

@walker21 - read the article that big les has pointed to - it'll answer your questions

Are you serious?! what brand do you use?
I use MP's version and it's horrid sip on in a shake, hence why I have to knock it back quickly with a shot of water.

Creatine is fine in shakes as the taste it minimal, but Glutamine and BCAA powder is terrible!

    Yeah MP's brand.

either with ~40-50g of whey or in a cup with some squash.

No issue at all for me, almost tastes a bit cardboardy but I oddly enough like it..
