You can get subs with built in amps that are easy enough to install but if your head unit is pants, you may need to buy a new one of those too.

    ^^^ this

Basically you can cheap & get reasonable sound or you can spend thousands & get a competition spec system.

My current setup in my Leon Cupra is...

    Pioneer DEH-P8600MP H/U
Phoenix Gold T.i Elite 6.5" Comps up front running active
Digital Designs DD2512 12" Sub run at 2ohm in a 3.5Cu Ft Box Slot ported & tuned to 33hz
Genesis Profile 4 amp running the PG comps
Genesis Profile 1 Amp running the sub at 2ohm

All told that system set me back about £1700 (not including cables & sound deadening) but thumps with the best of them & is a prefect SQ+ system.

Depending on what you want from the system you could be a very good system for about £700 including H/U, 4 Channel Amp, Components & Sub

That said what car do you have & what sort of music do you listen to?

Easiest way in my experience is get an average amp and sub and fine tune the EQ to get the best out of your standard speakers.

A step up would be to replace the existing speakers.

    Unaffiliated.

Happen to know speaker sizes?...im thinking new HU, coaxiel front and a Amp 12" sub with box kti in the back, would be about £550, fitting about £80-100.

Yeah Genesis went down a couple of yeasr back now but the Amps are still well regarded as being top quality & Gordon will still arrange servicing & supply parts for amps that need them.

TA can be a bit iffy lately, loads of new faces & most of the helpful old timers don't post so much.

Had a look & an Astra VXR runs 17cm (6.5") so plenty of options & wihtout upgrading the H/U I'd consider this a reasonable £500 system...

    MB Quart 4 Channel Amp @ £190
    http://www.bassjunkies.com/amplifiers/4-channel-amplifiers/mb-quart-dsc-4125?cPath=2_20

    Focal PolyGlass 165VB @ £128
    http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/focal-polyglass-165-vb.html

JL Audio CP112 12" Slot Ported Sub Enclosure @ £190
    http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jlaudio-cp112-w0v2.html

I'd run the amps front channels for the components & then bridge the rear channels to run the sub.
Fronts should see 125 Wrms & the sub will get a very healthy 500 Wrms
The ported box means it will hit the lows well but being a 12" will mean it will also be punchy when required.

You should be able to run an RCA adaptor kit to the Factory headunit to change the speker connections to be RCA adaptors if your H/U doesnt already feature them.

That would be a pretty good starter system then from there you can upgrade the H/U & add a monoblock (1 Channel Amp) for the sub & run the front end active (one channel per speaker...mid & tweeter will all see 125Wrms then & adds loads of tuning options to improve the sound immensly)

    HTH?

    Happy shopping

What about the factory set equaliser?, the sounds gonna be all over the place as well the as the bass limiter when he punches the volumne up.

    In what respect?
I've run many systems that way & I've never had an issue with the sound being all over the place.

Any installer worth paying will be able to set it up so there are no issues with the sound.

So you have never used a clean sweep on a Stock HU?

Most, well 90% of the market pre installed HU's come with a factory equaliser setting, also the Volumne can have a built in limiter to reduce the bass to protect the factory speakers from damage.

Ah i see what your saying

I'm guessing the installers must have sorted that when they installed the system because I've never experienced anything like that

Obviously it would help if he could replace the H/U as well but that's going over budget by about £100-£150
