pullovers

Hi bro
Do you think pullovers are a good exercise?
Ive found over a peroid of time they have lifted my rib cage ok .
But at the expense of my abs which have also lifted and pushed forward making it inpossible to abdominal vaccum.
What do you think?

After lat pulldowns, I think pullovers are the second most useless exercise in all bodybuilding. There's very little evidence that the rib cage can actually be expanded. I've know younger guys that did pullovers to help expand their rib cage, but I can't tell you that it did or didn't work because how can we know how big their rib cage would have grown to without pullovers? In guys over 20 with their growth pretty much complete, I haven't seen anyone actually increase the size of their rib cage.

If you're doing pullovers to try to build your back, then there are much better back builders - rows, chins, and deadlifts.

I've got to agree with Frankie here, pullovers are a waste of energy.

Disagree that LPD's are THAT bad, agree that tricep kick backs are terrible and as a chest exercise see no point for pullovers.

    That's my .02c

Lat pulldowns are pretty good in my book, they certainly helped me before i could perform full pull-ups/chins. The problems with pullovers are that they are a 'middle of the road' exercise they're neither here nor there. i.e. as a chest/back exercise.

Personally i dont feel there is a need for them and if you were to do them proper form is an absolute must. The amount of people injured in the process of these at the gym i used to visit was shocking.

As for rib cage expansion that belongs on the same pile as concentration curls for a 'peak'

That list would be too long. It would be much easier to list all the good ones. Start with Squats in my opinion.

    Agreed!

The best ones that everyone should use (for adding mass)are:

    Squats
    Deadlifts
Bench press (or dips, or inc bench)
Bent over barbell rows (or dbell rows)
    Overhead press

After that everything also is optional at best.

Lat pulldowns are not a pretty good exercise in my opinion either.

GOTTA DISAGREE WITH YOU ALL ABOUT PULLOVERS.........BOOOOOOO!!! I USE PULLOVERS AS A PRE-EXHAUST FOR MY TRICEPS, I DO A SET OF PULLOVERS THEN STAIGHT OVER TO SKULLCRUSHERS, MY TRICEPS PUMP IS UNBELIEVEABLE TRY THEM AND YOULL SEE WHAT I MEAN, OR TRY EVEN A SET OF PULLOVERS THEN STRAIGHT ONTO A SET OF CLOSE GRIP PRESS, THE PULLOVERS ARE DONE WITH THE EZ BAR. BUT MY LATS WHERE THEY START UNDER MY ARMS ALWAYS GET THICKER WHEN I DO THEM. BUT I DO AGREE AS FOR EXPANDING YOUR RIB CAGE, ITS NEVER WORKED FOR ME.
