pullups - before or after weights?

If you were to add pullups/chinups into a routine, is better to do first or towards the end of a session?

Say for instance I was doing a back/bicep session and was doing 3 x 8 seated rows, 3 x 8 seated lat pulldowns, 3 x 8 preacher curls, and 5 x 8 shrugs, would doing pullups be too much anyway?

I tend to do pullups (chins) after my weights, basically because I do them on the same session as deadlifts and I like to start with deads as they requier a lot of energy to perform.

The thing is, if you are doing seated lat pulldowns then there's not much point doing chins as they are basically the same movement. I would drop the lat pulldown machine and stick the chins in instead. But it all depends on your goals really. What are your goals? to get big?

I normally do chinups on a deadlift day too, but there is the complication that my gym doesnt have many free weights so I use my own in my garage - which also has my chin-up bar - and it is so hot in there I cant stick it, my gym maybe a bit crap but it does have air-con!

goals are much like anyones else's here: bigger torso, my shoulders are quite broad and my back is naturally strong from the jobs I've had in the past (butcher and brickie's labourer) but now I'm a desk jockey and I'm trying to balance my back strength with arm and chest size. I havent neglected my legs or back just given them less priority - you should see the size of my calves compared to the rest of me lol - carrying all those beef hindquarters really builds up your legs.

its not a typical workout as I dont have access to many free weights, therefore I'm not going to set myself up for a negative critique

I mainly use machines and I do a bit of cardio at the end of my sessions to lose a couple of inches off my waist, but I do target the big muscle groups regularly, the only little muscle I do concentrate on is my bicep as I have small arms compared to my shoulders and legs, the triceps are coming on very nicely due to my (surprised) competence at dips.

If you're doing pulldowns there's no point doing pull-ups as well.

    I agree....

Would you consider chins to be a better choice than pulldowns?

I'm not sure really. I prefer them, and the consensus seems to be that they're better but I'm not convinced there's a whole lot of difference.

OK just got back from the gym and this is what I did:

2 minutes of stretching followed by 10 mins of cardio (xtrainer) to warm up - nothing too hard.

Just for the hell of it I went straight into chin-ups just to see how it felt, and it was hard First of all I did the overhand grip but only managed about 5 before I went to failure, had a minute or 2 rest and tried underhand grip - much easier I thought, managed 3 x 5 reps before I decided that was enough - I didnt want to get too fatigued at that point.

Then I went to the Lat pulldowns - reason being that I dont think I'm strong enough for the widegrip ovehand grip yet, I can manage about 56kg on the pulldown though - I weigh 75kg so that about 2/3 of my bodyweight. Did 3 x 8 overall.

    Then onto DB shrugs , 4 x 8,
    3 x 8 seated machine rows
3 x 5 preacher curls - arms getting knackered by now
    3 x 8 shoulder press
5 minutes on the air stepper and 5 minutes jog on the treadmill.

Bloody hell, small world, I'm from Abercynon myself and go to Aberdare or Abercynon sports centre. I think the one in Hawthorn is fairly well equiped but not sure what gyms/centres are in Caerphilly, sorry fella.
