saving music to PC / itunes help

hi all, this may be very easy and obvious to many of you but not to me im afraid,

i have itunes for my iphone on my work laptop, my IT guy gave me a new laptop and subsequently i have lost all songs etc on itunes, it is completely empty.
i found the various folders for the artists on my laptop hard drive but there were no songs in them . i have lost all including those i paid for aswell. im very pi**ed off. form now would it be safer and easier to save them to my laptop first, in windows media player maybe? then import them into itunes? will that way ensure i cant looe them again?
thanks for any help.

Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.

    Thats exactly what i do...

Have everything backed up in media player format, then move to itunes when needed... everythings doubled up on my hard drive at min, but i've had probs in the past where itunes could not locate etc, easy to delete and drag across...

Id just make sure your windows media player is set to rip track off cd's as MP3 format, so then it stays mp3 on ipod, the WMA format in media player has to be converted to AAC on itunes in order to play, but i find the AAC take up more memory and are quieter when played on an ipod then MP3s...

Im pretty sure Apple allows to redownload your paid tracks from your account for free.

Itunes stores the songs in its own library, so technically doubles up alot of the time....so wondering how you got them deleted.
