should I take a break for a week?

I've been lifting weights since the beginning of the year, and I now do 3 sessions a week of about 2 hours each (mon-wed-sat usually) because i work long hours and it's the best way to fit it in. My job has been hectic recently and I'm physically and mentally tired. I struggled to get through my weights session on Saturday and I really don't feel up to going again today. Work has calmed down a bit now and I plan to get plenty of sleep and recharge a bit this week but I just wanted some advice really - is it best to listen to my body and take a break from weights for a few days, or should I knuckle down and force myself to get through this week's training even though I don't really feel up for it? I'm reluctant to just skip sessions because I want to maintain my progress, but would the break do me more good than just carrying on blindly?

Any advice appreciated.

Walker.

i take a week off every 3-4 months. A total break. sometimes in between i have a light week where i only train twice (lightly), but the one week i do have off, it is totaly off. Nothing even half physical. I too work in a stressfull job and work shifts, i think 1 week off would not effect you, may even increase your enthusiasm.

If you have to ask, you need a week off... If you are feeling tired and run-down your lifting will be sub-maximal, so you should find that you make progress over the week off i.e. be bigger and stronger when you get back.

I think most people recommend taking a break every 8 weeks or so, although personally I do it instinctively i.e. whenever I'm feeling crappy and tired.

Take a week out my man, do nothing at all. I do this every 3 to 4 months and feel much better for it. To be honest, I feel harder as my muscles have had a longer time to heal.

You should always listen to your body....

Enjoy your week off mate -- keep your diet the same as if you were training though

good advice from above and it's a good sign that you want to listen to your body. Enjoy the break and you'll find that your body will repay you with some increased gains if you've been eating right, when you train again.
