sleep paralysis and seeing spirits- scientific explanations?

Probably most people have had this, when you wake up in the night but you cant move or scream and its like someone is pushing on you or an evil presence is watching you ...the explanation being you've woken up before your REM cycle has finished, so your brain wakes up but body still paralysed by sleep..

i was just wondering how that seemingly simple explanation accounts for the feeling of an evil spirit? because it seems to be almost universal....i can understand feelings of panic etc but why demons ?

I use to get 'waking dreams' quite a bit and I was told it was largely due to stress.  I never had demons, just a feeling there was someone else/an intruder present.

yes your body is paralised during sleep to stop you acting out ur dreams.  woke up many times still para, usually in the morning just before im due to wake and still in limbo.

For me it's some kind of presence at the foot of my bed but I can never tell what it is. Very spooky. I wouldn't necessarily describe it as demonic but it's bloody scary lol

I've read that in some cultures it the presence tends to take the form of a witch, others a demon, others a ghost, so I guess there's some kind of cultural input into what you make the presence out to be

i used to always have a dream that it was coming - it could be the angel of death or a demon and then id wake up not being able to move or breathe properly?! for around 3 months when i was 15 it was happening almost every day, strangely it started just a month or so after one of my best friends died so definetly it may have been stress or the mind just struggling to cope

It's happened 3 times to me. The last couple times, it's a Roman soldier, out of armour, bearded and looking down on me. I wake up screaming. No paralysis. I wake up he's there.

First time it was a mate who had passed away that year. Though he was standing 'through' the bed and hoverin over me. Before I knew what was happening, I was sat up and punching the air.

The Roman dude has real malevolence about him. In a daft way, Bluto from the Popeye cartoon would be a characature of him. His red tunic is vivid, though I cannot see below his chest. Just a big burly sod standing there, staring through gritted teeth.

Regardless of what it is, it's scary!!!

Not many will agree with what I say but I can give you the spiritual perspective on it.  You have different layers to you being and one of them is the astral body.  You may have heard of people who can astral project move to different dimensions of space through it.  When we sleep many of us astral project (sometimes not always) but either way 99.9% do it completely unconsciously.  So it could be that what you was experiencing was real albeit in a very unconscious state.

last few times its happened to me its always been a positive, reassuring prescence, more angelic than demonic.

You lot must have lousy karma, lol!

Google 'hypnagogic state' for more info. At the point of sleep the brain releases a chemical called dimethyltryptamine (DMT), also available synthetically and in herbal drugs like ayahuasca. Its a class A drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971)

So we're all temporarily in possession of a (self-made) controlled drug during the sleep process!

I have leucid dreams regularly and used to have something coming for me or I dream I would be dying somehow, heart attack, collapse etc. terrifying at the time but you start to realise when your having them. usually around stressful periods in your life. Still get them now and again but not scary ones anymore.

I've heard of this and a friend of mine gets it a lot but I want to experience it myself!

A logical explanation for the whole "demon/ghost" thing may be that you have grown up hearing stories of people seeing ghosts in their room and watching films like the Exorcist (demons in bed) so you associate something that's clearly quite frightening like this with paranormal activity when in reality there's a scientific reasoning behind it.

I have nothing to back this up, just a theory that popped into my head while reading this thread.

I can quite often control dreams, so I'll decide I have powers or can fly. Sometimes they're lucid. Though when i realise it, they require intense concentration to stay lucid, as you wake very easily. Two completely different dreams. Lucid dreams let you consciously run riot in an environment you know is not real. Control in dreams, you haven't established the environment is a dream.

ive only had it happen to me twice, many many many years ago, its my husband who gets it more regularly. (and he is the LEAST stressed/ anxious person, ever to exist!)

i just find it fascinating that the idea of a demon or bad thing being present is so common, even among westeners who havent been brought up with tales about spirits etc

Dhiren i did think about it being the self , being its like an out of body experience but that doesnt explain why the figure is almost always terrifying

the one my hubby had last night it was something like the grim reaper actually reaching out to him!!! pretty scarey stuff!!!

The idea of 'Demons' is very present in our culture. Probably mostly stemming from religious ideas. Red, tail, goatee, pitch fork whatever. Loads of us even dress up as 'demons' once a year... or a vampire... or zombie school girl depending on what takes your fancy in Oct :) Probably why the image is so common in these type of dreams?
