me personally i have a scorpion on my right leg, always loved scorpions and loved the design i had, then going to kickboxing etc got me inspired to get it done.
on my left leg is a dominatrix, my darker side, the other side of that leg will have a fallen angel, going to have a background from both merging it all into one big tattoo.

on my right arm is a sand timer in the shape of a heart with a dragon going down half my arm protecting it.
got that done after my dad had a heart attack, carpe diem across the sand timer means seize the day... basically live each and every moment to its fullest.

i always thought about finding the meaning of my second name, in gaelic or the likes, or in chinese symbols, then getting it made into a tattoo combined with tribal style design

I dont see why tattoo's should have meaning, I have lots, none of which have any meaning, they are just designs that I like.
They do serve a function of 'marking out' your life, by which I mean that each tattoo reminds me of what was happening in my life at the time of getting it.

Be sure to get yourself a barb wire tat 'round your bicep. Or how about some tribal? Heck! why not some nautical stars?.

Those are really unique and original.

do a google search of tattoos you like and mix n match the bits you like.
any decent artist will help you come up with a great tat and he will point you away from the ones that look like crap

we-ell, different process, eg I had the designs on my feet when I did a week long college course, but the design has nothing whatsoever to do with the course, the 2 just happened to co-incide.

all tattoos have a meaning, wether it seems insignificant or not.
if you got a tattoo because you liked the look of it, there would have been a reason why... be it your fav animal, or colour etc.
granted not all tats have a deep meaning, but meaning is there none the less.

my advice for people wanting to get tats that havent had one before etc is to print it out, put it by your pc, and if after a few weeks you still like the design then thinking about getting ink.
i have so many mates that rushed into designs etc and regretted it soon after getting the ink.
