If your having trouble reaching around, lie on the couch with your face and chest into the back, then twist your upper torse toward your glute while your legs still face the couch.

You can easily reach around then and control is fine.

I have done almost all my jabs in the thigh, but I always use the rectus femoris (center muscle) I have way too many veins on the even consider the lateralis. I just move up and down the femoris and always works fine for me.
