too small to compete!!

hey all , first off i hope this is in the right section i was unsure.

i have spoken to lots of lads who are very big lads and here the say they are too small for a comp. this got me thinking .. there are obv size requirements but can they be guessed at?

ie - a 6ft man would really have to be circa xxx lbs after diet to hold his own on stage...

reason i ask is im just over 5'10 and wondered how far away i am from competing and thought would be nice to have a basic figure to aim for after comp diet.

maybe lbs / inch of height?

i'm 6' and I was top end of my weight category (89.3kg) when I first competed (U90KG) and altho I had best condition at my height I cam in looking muscularly the least muscled because of my height.  Someone 4-5" shorter will look for every 1" about 5-10lb heavier.  Conditioning defo helps a lot as thats what got me 2nd place but make no mistake if you are a few inches taller than than someone at the same weight as you WILL look less muscled.

two really good replies in 2days from you so thank you ,

i was hoping to get on stage in roughly 2 years, im roughly 98kg but would drop to around 80kg at a guess to get in shape... maybe less.

would like to get to just under 90kg first show in top nick so 2 years and probly 15kg - 20kg to gain lol

im hoping as im still relativley new to bb i can drag a bit more weight on fast still.. this year since starting training for bodybuilding i  have gained around 17kg and slightly lowered bf... so ill have to keep slugging away

pictures are always good when asking for advice, as we only have what you write to go by.
we all know we are our own worst critic, so post up some pictures just basic back front full body shots no need to pull any poses, from that we will get a look at you muscle mass and distubrution, and if you not looking to compete for a couple years, give you an idea where you need to build extra muscle to balance your look

agreed..its hard without photos .its obvious a taller guy would suffer against a guy 5 4 or whatever but i think people assume you have to be on stage at 17 st to look any good a lot of guys weighing in around 80 kg look much bigger on stage but at your height to be competetive id guess you need to be ripped around 90 ..we all can come in heavier but condition over size (or preferably with it)the big guys your refering to at your gym prob dont have the willpower for the diet and make their excuses by saying theyre not big enough....give it a shot its a great feeling. gl

im 5'8.5  and i competed in the u80's the last 2 years a few lbs under the weight limit, but last year needing a couple more lbs off.  can be competitive at that height or a tiny bit taller in a regional show no problem at all, though at the finals would be outmassed by guys a few inches shorter.

it also depeneds on the individual, 2 people the same height can look quite different depending on structure.  eg. small joints and fat etc can make the person look bigger, where thick joints and long muscles make everything blend together and look smaller

You will fine a lot of sub 80kg people will be somewhere between 5' and 5' 7".   Height will work against you to start with.  However us taller guys have much more growing room...

Taller have more to fill out, quite simple. Not many at the top levels are over 5ft10/11. Mr Os, the top 10, same story throughout.

That shouldn't put you off, can still look great and should compete for the journey alone.

thanks guys for all the input.. i know its a long time away but i keep thinking nabba or ukbff as height vs weight lol but sure both will have pros and cons.

here is a link to my journal, joint with missus, for thoughs who havent seenany pics.

most people tend to tell me back and leg are good chest and arms are weak lol so least i know where to work on.

i guess ill just see how much lbm i can get in the next 18 months and then evaluate with coach last 6 months to see best options

if im honest and youd want me to ..you need to put on some muscle everywhere and in the next 18months or whatever, hit the good food hard ..its easy to get weight on but not muscle. legs look better than your top half which is rare.keep an eye on your fat but post some pics up in a year or so ...just blast the sheeet on every bodypart, gl

arniemonkey - ofcourse aways want honesty and thanks.. yeah my legs just grow and grow without too much focus.. i just train them then forget about it and they grow, chest and arms refuase to grow lol, but will get there.

im quietly confident i can gain plenty in the next 18months before prep but if im not at a decent size i wont rush anything, i want to be max weight i can in the class and nail condition. i always try to be THE bestat what i do so would defo want to nail it with split glutes etc e hahaha ... can anyone say over ambitious lol

    thanks again for your input

interesting read branch, and some good fair answers as well. not too sure on how it works as i think its a relatively new class but isn't classics done in height categories? worth a thought...DR..

yeah mate, someone mentioned this in my journal. i would be allowed to be upto 86kg but not sure how they judge it.. i will push my body to the limit in the next 18 months so keep an eye on my journal ..

if i dont get to a shredded 90kg i can always drop and do the classic

If you come in shreded fella you have given yourself a good chance of placing..don't get too hung up on the weight thing..I've competed 5 times, placed in them all including winning my first show and getting a 2nd of 15....I'm 5ft 7 and compete at around 11 stone..so, if you are 5ft 10, depending on the structure of your joints (or how big you 'look') I'd say if you are ripped at anything from 12 1/2 stone then you will be fine
