Mate had had one from about that time. He's on his second engine, then the brakes failed on him...haven't heard great stories about them to be honest.

Awful handling cars. Worst car in the Vauxhall line up. Worked for Vauxhall and had on as a company car. Not a patch on the equivalent Astra.

I had the 1.7 cdti astra estate but they are just outside my price range, the normal hatch astra might be an option
I've noticed almost every taxi round my way is a vectra, roomy/good mpg/not too slow is what I'm looking for... kids/dog/shopping, I've been used to a impreza sportwagon size boot
    Is the handling that bad?
Thx for the piston heads suggestion, good shout

ive had 2 an 03 plate 2.0 diesel, and an 06 diesel , not bad cars, dont know what the handling problems are, if i wanted a car that handled id buy a evo or scooby. i wanted a decent cheap to run family car and thats what i got. no complaints on the motor ways with them or the winding roads on the west coast of scotland. Plus as said bags of room.

Yes, the handling is awful. Very understeery, very heavy. The suspension is awful, doesn't handle undulations in the road very well, I can remember nealry losing the front end on a motorway after going over a dip.  The 150bhp diesel engine feels great in the Astra, awful in the Vectra.

Best thing to do would be to drive one mate.

It's also the (IIRC) 4th gen common rail diesel engine, it's a better lump than the older 2.0dti.

I'm not getting a mondeo (there loads about for that money) they look a bit like a grandad car and don't have as good mpg, looked at some focus tdi's but those along with the golf and A3 look a bit aged now.
The astra might be an option then I could get the same 1.7 cdti I had as a company car that did about 50+mpg... more on the stockport to exeter commute.
Yeah I guess I need to drive the Vectra
