what is your collecting hobby?

Do you collect anything as a hobby? And do you collect purely out of interest or as an investment? And has your hobby grown into more than just a casual jumble of odds and ends into something of significance?

I collect marine shells... not the kind you display in the bathroom but as a scientific collection. Anyone else with a serious interest in marine shells?

Replies on collecting full/empty vials of steroids, posters of Schwarzenegger/Coleman, beer mats and phone numbers of girls do not qualify to be taken seriously and will be deleted from this thread.

Pre teens I used to collect dead insects to my mothers horror when she found them all in empty match boxes under my bed, I then progressed to gem stones/minerals but soon got bored of that. I'm back to loving gemstones but don't collect them as such. Have a massive amethyst cave and am on the lookout for a nice quartz piece then no doubt I'll set my mind on another one. So I am sort of a wishful thinking collector

Then it is time to visit South Africa! Lots and lots of this stuff over here and gem and stone dealers everywhere. I know one of the top stone cutters in the country. Anything specific you are looking for?

I'm one of those that I'll know it when I see it. I'm after a quartz 'cluster'???? (meaning as they appear in the original state) Possibly about the size of a football. Not seen one here yet that appeals.

I bought my Dad an ammonite mounted on a fossil brick for his 60th he loved it because it had such a personal meaning between us (he was the one who got me liking gems and we used ot go fossil hunting on holidays)

Ive got a decent collection of body armour. Used quite a bit of in the security work ive done, but maybe collected a bit too many bits realy.LOL

From Full swat jackets to chainsaw protection shin guards, i try and pick the odd bits and bobs up when funds allow.

Does make the wife a bit concerned at times i guess, but as they say..

.. You cannot be too careful

    Kitty:

    Are you looking for geodes?
We have alot of those here in the US.
I'd love to help you find that special cyrstal cluster you are wanting.

I love gems and rocks too.

I just purchased some Louisiana opal. It is very rare and simply beautiful. It is so sparkly when the sun shines on it.
At first it just looks like a boring piece of sandstone but when the light hits it. WOW!
Photographs do not do it justice at all.

Ah, the joys of being a mod.

For your information old chum, there ARE people who collect beer mats, collections worth hundreds of thousands of Rand.
