whey on a low carb diet

my understanding of a low carb diet is to keep insulin levels low. would it then be best to avoid whey (such as in a meal replacement shake) to prevent unwanted insulin spikes?

In MRP's yes, because they've got carbohydrates in them. In terms of whey isolate or concentrate powders, no, because the quantity of carbohydrate in them is neglible at best.

Whey does actually produce an insulin spike just by virtue of its rapid absorption. I can reference a study if you like. To reduce the spike, add a mixture of mono fats (olive oil) and omega-3 fats (fish/flaxseed oils) or Udo's oil to whey.

It's in me e-book but for you, here it is http://care.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/7/5/465 Although the protein is unspecified, it just has to be whey as other proteins than milk & yoghurt are lower on the II.

Thanks Nige, yeh i know its in the appendix somewhere i would have thought, lots of links in the appendix, might be worth going through the various sites one day to have a good read about things.

Do you have any idea upon adding fats, how much it will slow the whey down? ? ?

I just looked in the appendix and that's one of the fluffed hyperlinks! You can still copy & paste the link, though.

That's one of those "How long is a piece of string" type questions. You'll just have to suck it and see.
